Paragraphs, Thesis and Cohesion

Build a paragraph around a claim that advances the thesis, not around a source or topic label. Evidence enters to place pressure on that claim, and the warrant explains the connection. Mark each sentence C, E, W or consequence. Revise when evidence arrives before the reader knows the purpose, or when the paragraph ends without returning to the essay's stakes.

A paragraph on inclusive pronouns can claim that a speech constructs civic belonging, quote the pattern, explain its shifting referent and show how exclusion complicates the appeal. Rigid formulas can produce mechanical prose. The elements may recur in different orders, but the reader must still be able to follow the inferential move.

A strong thesis gives a contestable answer, names the analytical relation and limits the claim. It should organise paragraph sequence rather than merely announce a topic. Underline the main claim, qualification and grounds. Check whether every promised term appears in the body and whether each major section is necessary to establish the answer.

Instead of saying a campaign uses rhetoric effectively, a thesis can argue that its expert ethos gains authority through data visualisation while narrowing which experiences count as evidence. A three-part list is not automatically a thesis. Avoid promising causes or audience effects that the available textual evidence cannot establish.

Cohesion helps readers connect sentences through repeated key terms, reference, logical transition and movement from given to new information. It should reveal structure without flattening complexity. Circle pronouns and demonstratives, draw arrows to their referents and highlight repeated conceptual terms. Replace vague this with a named process when more than one antecedent is possible.

A paragraph that moves from this issue to they to such effects forces readers to guess. Restoring the key noun and naming the causal link can shorten the sentence while increasing clarity. Repeating identical wording can become monotonous, but indiscriminate synonym swapping can break a conceptual chain. Preserve technical terms when continuity matters.

Worked application: A paragraph should make one argumentative move

Q [4 marks]. The marks shown here are not an official university assessment scheme; they organise this independent worked response. Apply a paragraph should make one argumentative move to the situation described here: A paragraph on inclusive pronouns can claim that a speech constructs civic belonging, quote the pattern, explain its shifting referent and show how exclusion complicates the appeal. Produce a reasoned conclusion that remains within the evidence boundary.
  • 1State the rhetorical question, audience and contested claim.
  • 1Point to a recoverable textual feature or source passage.
  • 1Explain the warrant connecting that evidence to the claim.
  • 1Revise the scope after testing a rival interpretation.

Sia tip — Annotate one passage for a paragraph should make one argumentative move with claim, textual feature, warrant and limit; revise the first place where the connection depends on an unstated assumption.
Glossary

Key terms

A paragraph should make one argumentative move
Claim, evidence, warrant and consequence belong in a deliberate sequence. Build a paragraph around a claim that advances the thesis, not around a source or topic label. Evidence enters to place pressure on that claim, and the warrant explains the connection.
The thesis controls scope and sequence
Write an answer whose parts forecast the essay's labour. A strong thesis gives a contestable answer, names the analytical relation and limits the claim. It should organise paragraph sequence rather than merely announce a topic.
Cohesion is managed expectation
Use given information, lexical chains and transitions to guide inference. Cohesion helps readers connect sentences through repeated key terms, reference, logical transition and movement from given to new information. It should reveal structure without flattening complexity.
FAQ

Paragraphs, Thesis and Cohesion FAQ

What changes after applying a paragraph should make one argumentative move to a new setting?

Build a paragraph around a claim that advances the thesis, not around a source or topic label. Evidence enters to place pressure on that claim, and the warrant explains the connection. Mark each sentence C, E, W or consequence. Revise when evidence arrives before the reader knows the purpose, or when the paragraph ends without returning to the essay's stakes. Rigid formulas can produce mechanical prose.

The elements may recur in different orders, but the reader must still be able to follow the inferential move. Mark the claim, textual feature and warrant separately before revising style.

How can the conclusion from the thesis controls scope and sequence be checked independently?

Instead of saying a campaign uses rhetoric effectively, a thesis can argue that its expert ethos gains authority through data visualisation while narrowing which experiences count as evidence. A three-part list is not automatically a thesis. Avoid promising causes or audience effects that the available textual evidence cannot establish. Use the competing reading to change scope or emphasis in the paragraph itself.

Which comparison makes cohesion is managed expectation meaningful in practice?

Use given information, lexical chains and transitions to guide inference Circle pronouns and demonstratives, draw arrows to their referents and highlight repeated conceptual terms. Replace vague this with a named process when more than one antecedent is possible. A second passage or source should place pressure on the same inference rather than merely echoing it.

Why should a paragraph should make one argumentative move remain conditional rather than universal?

Build a paragraph around a claim that advances the thesis, not around a source or topic label. Evidence enters to place pressure on that claim, and the warrant explains the connection. A paragraph on inclusive pronouns can claim that a speech constructs civic belonging, quote the pattern, explain its shifting referent and show how exclusion complicates the appeal.

Carry the rhetorical move into a new text while redefining audience, purpose and genre.

What is the first observable sign that the thesis controls scope and sequence has failed?

Underline the main claim, qualification and grounds. Check whether every promised term appears in the body and whether each major section is necessary to establish the answer. A three-part list is not automatically a thesis. Avoid promising causes or audience effects that the available textual evidence cannot establish. Tell the reader which response or authorial intention the available evidence cannot establish.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Annotate a live draft for Paragraphs, Thesis and Cohesion, marking each occurrence of a paragraph should make one argumentative move, the thesis controls scope and sequence, cohesion is managed expectation by its rhetorical job rather than by topic label. Use different signs for claim, textual feature, warrant, counter-reading and consequence. Read the paragraph as a sequence of reader expectations.

Point to the exact wording or source passage that permits the inference, then state why that evidence matters for this audience and genre. Revise one passage after a credible rival reading. The change should appear in scope, emphasis or causal language, not only in a final sentence that announces complexity. Finish with a decision note recording what moved, which evidence forced it and what the essay still cannot establish.

That trail supports citation accuracy and an honest oral account of authorship.
