Feminism and the Gendering of Design

Design is gendered

Week 3 shows how forms, meanings and symbols carry gendered values, and how design history has been told through ideas of men’s work, women’s work and consumption.

Beyond recovery

Feminist design history recovers overlooked women designers but also re-evaluates design’s role in perpetuating or challenging inequality.

Two case studies

The lecture uses the Frigidaire G2 refrigerator of 1981 and the Apple II computer to show recognition, co-option and gender norms at work, and the tutorial practises evaluating sources with CCOW and SIFT.

Why it matters

A feminist lens works on almost any artefact, because nearly every object assumes a user and a division of work.

Learning to name those assumptions is a skill you will reuse in Assessment 2.

The waves, briefly

The slides outline four waves, from the late nineteenth century to a possible fourth wave since 2012, and stress that the sequence is debated rather than fixed.

Read a kitchen appliance advertisement through a feminist lens

Q [4 marks]. AskSia-authored practice. An invented 1980s advertisement shows a smiling woman beside a new refrigerator under the slogan “Finally, a fridge that understands you.” Analyse it in four moves using the Week 3 lens. The mark allocation shown is an AskSia study weighting, not an official University marking scheme.

  • 1Describe what is shown: a woman, a domestic appliance and a slogan addressing her as its user.
  • 1Identify the gendered assumption: that kitchen work belongs to one woman, which material feminists in Hayden’s history challenged.
  • 1Name the mechanism: the language of being understood flatters domestic expertise to sell a product, the pattern Stein (2023) calls co-option.
  • 1Judge it: the advertisement recognises domestic knowledge yet reinforces the division of labour it appears to celebrate.
The advertisement appeals to women’s domestic expertise while assuming the kitchen is a woman’s sole responsibility. Read with Hayden and Stein, it shows design and marketing quietly reinforcing a gendered division of labour.
Sia tip — Separate what an image shows from what it assumes; write one sentence for each before you interpret.
Glossary

Key terms

Co-option
Taking up the language or values of a movement to serve commercial or institutional ends.
Material feminists
Activists who saw unpaid domestic labour as a basic cause of inequality and proposed new homes, kitchens and neighbourhoods.
CCOW
A source evaluation method that checks Credentials, Claims, Objectives and Worldview.
SIFT
A four-step check on a claim: stop, then investigate the source, find better coverage and trace the claim to its origin.
FAQ

Feminism and the Gendering of Design FAQ

What does it mean to say design is gendered?

It means objects, images and spaces carry assumptions about men and women in their form, symbolism and use. The Week 3 lecture uses the refrigerator to show this, and the slides add early computers, whose design and advertising followed traditional gender norms.

What happened with the Frigidaire G2?

In 1980 Frigidaire Australia asked readers of women’s magazines for refrigerator ideas, then held a day-long Women’s Design Conference in Sydney. Stein (2023) finds the participants had little agency over the G2 released in 1981, so their expertise was co-opted for marketing, though the event did let homemakers recognise their knowledge as design expertise.

How do CCOW and SIFT differ?

CCOW asks about a source’s Credentials, Claims, Objectives and Worldview, so it suits a careful read of one text. SIFT asks you to Stop, Investigate the source, Find better coverage and Trace claims, which suits checking a fast-moving claim, and the Canvas page notes it works for generative AI output.

What are the Week 3 readings?

The required readings are Alison Place’s 2023 introduction to Feminist designer and Ellen Lupton’s 1993 chapters from Mechanical brides. Recommended readings include Dolores Hayden on the grand domestic revolution, Pertierra on kitchen technologies in Cuba, Stein on the Frigidaire women’s design conference, and Armstrong on fashion, gender and industrial design.

What does the Apple II example show?

The lecture slides use early personal computers, including the Apple II of 1977 and its advertising, as a second case study. Their point is that traditional gender norms shaped how computers were designed and marketed, which you can test by asking who is shown using the machine and who is assumed to be its buyer.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Make a three-column table in your journal for the three feminist approaches and add one example to each as you read. Practise CCOW and SIFT on a current sustainability or charity claim from a brand, as the studio does. If Week 3 is your Assessment 1 lens, the Frigidaire case gives you dated artefacts, a named concept and a scholarly source, which is everything a strong visual document needs.

Finally, take one advertisement from the present day and apply the same four-move reading you practised on the Frigidaire case.
