AF7620 Chap.10 Pitching a Tech-Enhanced Feature or Series
Pitching a Tech-Enhanced Feature or Series
The task in one sentence
Plan a feature or a limited series set in a genre that has always been costly or hard to organise, and show how a strategic integration of emerging technology reduces the budget or overcomes traditional production barriers enough to bring it within reach of an independent producer or a mid-sized streaming platform.
The genre choices are science fiction, high fantasy, period drama, elaborate action or thriller, and stylised animation. The brief insists that the proposal is built around a clear, compelling story and that what matters most is method: how closely the story world and the production plan reinforce each other.
What goes into the single PDF
You submit one consolidated PDF with three parts.
The pitch deck, of ten to fifteen slides, is investor-facing and sells both the creative vision and the production strategy; it must present the logline and synopsis, introduce the characters, show a mood board or an overview of the world, and name the key team, with you as producer.
The tech-enhanced budget top-sheet is one page with two columns, a traditional estimated cost and a lower tech-enhanced cost, and brief annotations that justify the key savings.
The production pipeline and technology strategy, of three to five pages, is described as the heart of the project: the tools chosen for pre-production, production and post-production, the reasons for each choice, and what each does for the budget and for the film.
The proof-of-concept
Alongside the PDF you provide digital assets that demonstrate your technical approach.
An AI-generated concept image convincing enough to pass for a still from the finished film is required of individuals and groups alike.
A short previs or animatic of fifteen to thirty seconds made with AI or simple 3D tools, and a screenshot from a virtual location built in Unreal Engine or a similar platform, are optional for individuals.
How it is graded
Innovation and strategic thinking carries forty per cent: the depth and creativity of the technological integration, whether the workflow is genuinely new rather than the predictable one, and whether each choice is justified and specific.
Producerial acumen carries thirty per cent: whether the budget and financial strategy are credible, the savings logical and well researched, and the logistics practical. Creative foundation, character design and world-building carries twenty per cent: a compelling logline, an engaging synopsis, developed characters, a unique world, and above all technology that enhances this story rather than sitting beside it as a gimmick.
Professionalism and clarity carries ten per cent: the polish and persuasive power of the documents and the proof-of-concept.
The rules around the submission
All projects must be submitted and every stage of the final project completed to pass. Work handed in late without advance approval receives no mark, and every AI-generated element must be accompanied by its prompts and applications.
The teaching plan places a consultation on the proposed film and a discussion of your own production pipeline before the individual pitching week, which are the natural points to test the budget logic.

- 3Judge it on producerial acumen.
- 2Judge creative foundation and professionalism.
- 2Name the two highest-value changes.
Key terms
- Pitch Deck
- An investor-facing set of slides that sells a project's creative vision and its production strategy, including logline, synopsis, characters, world and team.
- Tech-Enhanced Column
- The second column of the budget top-sheet, showing the estimated cost of the project when the proposed technologies are used.
- Producerial Acumen
- The evaluation criterion that judges the credibility of the budget and financial strategy and the practical understanding of production logistics.
- Mood Board
- A collage of images, colours and references that conveys the intended look and feeling of a film's world.
- Synergy
- In the brief, the link between the creative world and the production method, where the chosen technology strengthens this particular story rather than acting as a gimmick.
Pitching a Tech-Enhanced Feature or Series FAQ
Can the pitch be done individually or in a group?
The requirements are headed individual or group, and the proof-of-concept rules distinguish the two: the AI-generated concept frame is compulsory for both, while the short previs and the virtual location screenshot are optional for individuals. The teaching plan itself names the final week of presentations as individual project pitching, so confirm your arrangement with the teaching team.
What makes a budget saving credible?
A saving is credible when it names the traditional cost it replaces, the technology that replaces it and the new cost that technology introduces. The producerial acumen criterion asks whether the justification is logical and well researched, so a line such as fewer location days offset by a volume stage rental is stronger than a flat percentage cut applied to every line.
Assessment move
Draft the budget top-sheet before the deck. Once every saving is annotated with the technology responsible and the new cost it brings, the pipeline strategy almost writes itself, and the deck only has to show the story those numbers make possible.
