Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Three ideas with one aim

This chapter defines diversity, equity and inclusion as the Week 8 slides present them and shows why each needs its own evidence.

A workforce can be diverse yet not inclusive, and equity is the bridge that changes the means so people can reach fair outcomes.

From awareness to action

It covers the dividends of workplace diversity, the five steps to cultural competence, debates such as the glass ceiling and the opt-out trend, and the responses organisations use, from mentoring to employee affinity groups.

How the exam tests DEI

The Week 8 practice question asks you to define diversity, equity and inclusion from the readings and analyse how a business demonstrates them in its practices, relationships and customer experience.

The chapter shows how to give each of the three ideas its own evidence and then judge the business value, using the dividends of diversity listed on the slides.

Define DEI and analyse a business

Q [10 marks]. An invented Northland eco-tourism operator hires guides from local hapū, offers transport and equipment to visitors with disabilities, and asks every guide to help design new tours. Define DEI and analyse how the business demonstrates it. Marked on the final exam's three published criteria: concepts 1 mark, application and justification 8, communication 1. The marks shown follow that published rubric, but this invented question is not an official University exam question.

  • 1Understanding key concepts: define diversity, equity and inclusion precisely.
  • 8Application, analysis, judgement and justification: link each concept to a practice and judge the benefit.
  • 1Communication and structure: one clear paragraph within 250 words.
Diversity means including people from different backgrounds, equity provides varied means toward just outcomes, and inclusion is the degree to which people feel valued and part of the team. Hiring local hapū guides builds diversity and brings authentic knowledge. Providing transport and equipment is equity, because visitors with disabilities receive the support they need to share the same experience. Inviting every guide to design tours is inclusion. Together these strengthen the product and the operator's community relationships.
Sia tip — Give each letter of DEI its own piece of evidence.

FAQ

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion FAQ

What is the difference between diversity and inclusion?

Diversity describes who is present in a workforce, while inclusion describes whether those people feel valued for their knowledge and skills and part of the team. An organisation can hire diverse staff and still exclude them from decisions.

What does equity mean in the Week 8 slides?

The slides say all people should have equal rights and opportunities, and that equity provides varied means for people to move toward equal and just outcomes. In practice it means adjusting support or access so different people can reach the same fair result.

What responses do organisations use to support diversity?

The slides list enhancing structures and policies, expanding recruitment, establishing mentor relationships, increasing awareness of harassment, and encouraging employee affinity groups that let staff advocate, network and combat isolation.

What is the glass ceiling?

The Week 8 slides describe it as an invisible barrier that separates women and minorities from senior management positions. They link it to the opt-out trend, in which people leave corporate roles before reaching that barrier, often to start their own businesses.

What is cultural competence?

The slides describe it as the ability to interact effectively with people whose cultural capital and experiences differ from your own. An organisation reaches it when its culture embraces diversity and lets everyone thrive, through steps from uncovering problems to maintaining momentum.

Study strategy

Exam move

Make a three-column table headed diversity, equity and inclusion, and write the slide definition at the top of each. Under each, list two practices from an organisation you know. Then pick one debate, such as the glass ceiling, and one organisational response that addresses it. Practise a 250-word answer that defines DEI and analyses a business, giving each letter its own evidence.

Then explain how one dividend of diversity from the slides would appear in that organisation's results. Keep one example for each letter of DEI ready in your notes. Practise defining each of the three terms in under twenty words.
