Media Planning and Scheduling

Reach counts how many or what proportion of a defined audience receives at least one exposure; frequency describes repeated exposure among those reached. Maximising both is rarely possible within a fixed budget.

The planner uses objective, message complexity, purchase cycle, competitive clutter and prior familiarity to decide whether breadth or repetition deserves priority, while acknowledging that estimated exposure is not the same as attention or effect. Continuous scheduling maintains a steady presence, flighting concentrates activity into active periods separated by silence, and pulsing combines a base level with heavier bursts.

The labels describe allocation patterns rather than universal best practice. Seasonality, purchase interval, forgetting, availability, budget and competitor timing determine which pattern can sustain the intended response without wasting exposure. Media selection asks where the defined audience can encounter the message with suitable attention, context, format and timing. Popularity or novelty does not establish fit.

A mix becomes strategic when media perform complementary jobs across the response pathway, duplication is understood and the handoff between contacts is feasible. The planner should be able to defend both inclusion and exclusion.

Connect reach and frequency answer different planning questions to a defensible decision

Q [4 marks]. A short case contains evidence relevant to reach and frequency answer different planning questions but ends with an unsupported recommendation. Show four repairs. The mark allocation is an editorial study aid, not an official university assessment scheme.
  • 1Name the precise concept from reach and frequency answer different planning questions that fits the observable evidence.
  • 1Separate the description of the case from the inference being made about it.
  • 1Use a media mix begins with audience fit to compare at least one plausible alternative.
  • 1State the evidence boundary and one finding that would change the recommendation.
A high-quality response makes the mechanism explicit, keeps the claim proportional to the evidence and shows why the preferred action survives a comparison with a credible alternative.
Sia tip — Write reach, frequency, schedule and media context on separate lines before judging the mix.

FAQ

Media Planning and Scheduling FAQ

When should reach take priority over frequency?

Prioritise reach when the objective requires broad category entry, the eligible audience is not yet covered and one exposure can plausibly perform the first communication job. Check distribution, duplication and audience quality before interpreting the larger number as useful exposure.

How can a planner estimate useful repetition?

Begin with message complexity, prior knowledge, competitive clutter, purchase timing and the response expected from repeated encounters. Treat effective frequency as a planning estimate to test, because excessive repetition can create waste, irritation or wear-out rather than persuasion.

What distinguishes continuous, flighting and pulsing schedules?

Continuous scheduling maintains presence, flighting alternates active and inactive periods, and pulsing adds heavier bursts to a continuing base. The suitable pattern follows purchase timing, memory decay, competitive activity, budget and the moments when the audience can respond.

Why is audience fit stronger than channel popularity?

Popularity describes aggregate attention, whereas fit asks whether the defined audience uses the medium in a context that supports this proposition and next action. A fashionable platform can still supply poor credibility, insufficient time or costly duplicate exposure.

What role should each medium play in a mix?

Assign a distinct job such as initial reach, demonstration, detailed evidence, social validation or response, then describe the handoff between contacts. A list of platforms is not a mix until their sequence and complementary contribution can be inspected.

Study strategy

Exam move

Build a chapter ledger around reach and frequency answer different planning questions, media schedules allocate attention through time, a media mix begins with audience fit. For each class example, record the observable fact before attaching a concept. Add a second column for the mechanism that connects evidence to the claim, a third for a credible alternative explanation, and a fourth for the information still missing.

Rehearse by converting one descriptive sentence into a bounded analytical claim, then try to falsify it with a counterexample. At the end of the week, choose one decision and explain it aloud without relying on a definition list. The explanation should name the actor, setting, mechanism, consequence and evidence limit. Redraft any passage that jumps from a label directly to advice.

Compare the redraft with the current task criteria and preserve a short source trail for figures, examples and factual assertions. Before submission, reverse the process: underline every recommendation, trace it back to evidence, and ask whether a competing interpretation was genuinely considered.

This routine makes the chapter useful for both short responses and extended applied work without turning the concepts into interchangeable slogans.
