Listening and Sound Vocabulary

This chapter builds the descriptive language used throughout Sound in Performance. It begins with sound as perceived variation in air pressure, then separates frequency from pitch, amplitude from perceived volume, and fixed level from dynamics over time.

Timbre and the harmonic series explain why two instruments playing the same note remain distinguishable, while duration, rhythm, pulse and tempo describe temporal organisation. Texture, intensity, directionality and noise extend that vocabulary to complete sound worlds. The final move links audible detail to affect: first identify what changed, then explain the bodily or emotional response it may produce.

Describe a sound before interpreting it

Q [4 marks]. The marks used here are not an official university allocation. A sustained tone begins low and quiet, rises in pitch, grows louder, adds a rough upper layer, then stops abruptly. Write a four-part listening description that distinguishes the audible evidence from its possible affect.
  • 1Pitch and level: the tone rises from low to high pitch while its perceived loudness increases.
  • 1Timbre and texture: the added upper-frequency content makes the tone rougher, brighter and denser than it was at the start.
  • 1Duration and envelope: the sound is sustained through a gradual build but ends with a short, abrupt release rather than a fade.
  • 1Possible affect: the accumulation of pitch, loudness and spectral density may create mounting tension, but this interpretation follows from the audible description rather than replacing it.
Model answer: The event rises in pitch and loudness, becomes brighter and rougher as upper frequencies accumulate, and then cuts off abruptly. Those observable changes create an intensifying contour that may be heard as tension followed by interruption. The checkable result is a description containing pitch, dynamics, timbre or texture, duration, and a separately labelled affect.
