DPHU1008 Chap.11 Lens Evaluation in the Handwritten Portfolio
Lens Evaluation in the Handwritten Portfolio
Assessment 2 is a staged task worth 30%, with only Stage 3 marked. In the Week 6 tutorial your group describes and situates an assigned rendering; in Week 8 it receives a set of analytical lenses and identifies strengths and aspects to critique.
In the Week 9 workshop each tutorial group is assigned one lens, and you write an individual answer by hand: at least 400 words in two hours, plus 15 minutes to upload photos.
Question 1 asks for a brief description and key message in about 50 words.
Question 2 asks you to apply the lens, evaluate strengths and weaknesses from its perspective, and support a logical argument with one academic reading and your prior research, in at least 350 words. You may bring one handwritten page of key words and your printed readings with handwritten notes.
The UNSW Handbook names this component Portfolio Part One: Draft and Final Submission.
The rubric scores four criteria at 5 marks each. Description and message rewards a precise key message. Application of the lens rewards understanding of its nuances in context. Evaluation rewards strengths and weaknesses stated clearly and accurately.
Supporting evidence rewards specific material from the academic reading and your prior research, integrated into the argument. At the end you upload photos of your answer and notes to Moodle and hand both papers to your tutor.

Building a Question 2 plan in ten minutes
- +1Lens: state that pluralism asks for several situated views instead of one view from nowhere.
- +1Strength: the single rate is easy to compare over time and widely understood.
- +1Weakness: it hides differences by age, region and Indigenous status, so it speaks for groups it does not show; cite the workbook.
- +1Verdict: useful as a headline, weak as an account of who is unemployed; a plural redesign adds located panels.

Lens Evaluation in the Handwritten Portfolio FAQ
Which lens will I be assigned in Week 9?
Each tutorial group is assigned one lens from those explored in the Week 8 tutorial. The materials name Feminist Data Principles in a sample but do not publish the full list, so prepare notes on every major course concept.
What notes are allowed in the handwritten task?
One page, one side, of handwritten key words or phrases, plus printed required readings with your own handwritten notes and highlights. Full sentences, paragraphs, photocopied or printed notes are not allowed and will be taken away.
How long should my answer be?
At least 400 words in total: about 50 words for Question 1 and at least 350 for Question 2. You have two hours to write, followed by 15 minutes to upload photos of your answer and notes page.
Can I write my answer in pencil or bring a laptop?
The outline lists pen and paper among the essential resources and describes the task as handwritten and invigilated, with photos uploaded at the end. Check with your tutor about anything else, since unauthorised resources can make an attempt non-genuine.
Are Stages 1 and 2 of Assessment 2 marked?
No. The group stages in Weeks 6 and 8 are not assessed, but the outline says they build the knowledge and skills for Stage 3, the individual handwritten answer in Week 9 that carries the 30%.
Assessment move
Rehearse the task twice under timed conditions with a rendering of your own and a lens drawn at random from the weekly concepts. Prepare your notes page as an argument map, not a glossary. Annotate the printed readings with page numbers next to key claims, so evidence is quick to find on the day. On the day, spend the final five minutes checking that each paragraph names the lens and cites the reading by author and year.
Time a full practice answer by hand at least once, since handwriting speed limits length.
