Biomedical and Wind-Energy Case Studies

The course outline names five research-facing applications: blood-pump flow estimation and deadbeat control, predictive control during hemodialysis, heart-rate modelling with LQ or deadbeat control, wind-power smoothing with battery storage, and wind-plant income maximisation through dynamic programming.

This chapter shows how to map each case into state, input, output, objective and constraints while refusing unsupported clinical, plant or economic numbers.

  • +1Name the clinical hemodynamic output and the wind-power smoothing output at the level stated in the outline.
  • +1Identify the manipulated input only from the current case material rather than assuming one.
  • +1Explain that both methods predict over a horizon and resolve after new measurements.
  • +1Keep clinical safety evidence separate from battery power and energy constraints.
The shared receding-horizon architecture does not create a shared plant, actuator, objective or constraint set. Each numerical controller must be built from its own current case data and validated against its own physical risks.
Sia tip — Transfer the design questions across applications, not the numerical tuning or safety assumptions.
Glossary

Key terms

Non-Invasive Estimation
Non-invasive estimation infers a target variable without requiring a direct invasive measurement.
Hemodynamic Variable
A hemodynamic variable describes an aspect of blood flow or circulation relevant to a controlled treatment.
Power Smoothing
Power smoothing uses controlled storage or generation to reduce variation in delivered power.
Battery State
Battery state carries stored-energy availability and links present control actions to future choices.
Case Validation
Case validation tests whether a controller meets its application objective within the plant-specific limits.
FAQ

Biomedical and Wind-Energy Case Studies FAQ

Why does the blood-pump case include estimation?

The case pairs non-invasive estimation with deadbeat control, indicating that the controlled flow is not treated as a directly available state. The estimate therefore becomes part of the feedback evidence and must be validated as well as the controller.

How do the two wind-storage objectives differ?

Power smoothing targets the shape and variability of delivered power and is paired with MPC. Income maximisation values stored energy across decision stages and is paired with dynamic programming. A common battery does not make the objectives interchangeable.

Which application numbers can be used in an answer?

Use only parameters supplied in the current lecture, case-study material or examination question. Keep patient data, plant ratings, battery limits, prices, horizons and controller weights tied to the specific case.

What transfers safely between the biomedical cases?

Transfer the design questions: what is measured, what must be estimated, what can be commanded, which objective is pursued and which limits matter. Do not transfer clinical thresholds, actuator assumptions, patient parameters or tuning values between plants.

How should a case-study answer end?

State why the method structure fits the stated prediction, estimation, constraint or staged-decision problem, then name application-specific validation evidence. Keep the conclusion conditional on the supplied model and limits rather than claiming general clinical or economic effectiveness.

What should happen when a case omits an actuator or limit?

Name the missing information needed to complete the model or optimisation instead of inventing a value. The control architecture can still be explained symbolically, but numerical tuning and performance claims must wait for the case-specific actuator, constraint and data.

Study strategy

Exam move

Create one card for each case with five fields: state, input, output, objective and constraint. Add the method named in the outline and one application-specific validation concern. Practise explaining why estimation is central to the blood-pump case, why predictive control appears in both dialysis and wind smoothing, and why dynamic programming fits storage-income decisions.

Keep all numerical values tied to the current case brief rather than filling gaps from generic examples. Revise by comparing pairs, not by memorising a paragraph for each application. Compare the two biomedical estimation and control stories by asking which variable is measured directly and which must be inferred.

Compare clinical MPC with wind-smoothing MPC by separating their shared receding-horizon loop from their different actuators, risks and constraints. Compare wind smoothing with income scheduling by holding the battery state constant while changing the objective and evaluation metric. For each comparison, write one sentence about what transfers and another about what must remain plant-specific.

Build an answer template that starts with physical variables, connects them to the named method and ends with validation evidence. In clinical contexts, mention measurement credibility, variability, treatment limits and fallback behaviour without inventing effectiveness claims. In energy contexts, identify power, energy, forecast and economic quantities only when the case supplies them.

This approach prepares you to translate an unfamiliar application while preserving engineering boundaries. Shuffle the case cards and identify the method from the objective rather than from the application name. Then reverse the exercise: start from MPC, deadbeat control, LQ design or dynamic programming and list the case-specific information still required before calculation.

Finish each card with one measurable validation outcome and one limit that must not be violated. This makes the final comparison evidence-led rather than a list of fashionable controller labels.
