Synthesis, Documentation and Exhibition

The final stage coordinates design resolution, careful finishing, photography, two PDF submissions and the in-class exhibition. This chapter helps students freeze the right decisions, document scale and interaction, verify the files an assessor actually receives and arrange the physical evidence as one coherent project. It closes with a rubric-led audit of concept, iteration, execution, reflection and collaboration.

Q [3 marks]. The outcomes exist, but the PDFs, journal scan and exhibition are incomplete. Plan the closeout. This mark allocation is for AskSia closeout practice, not an official university marking scheme.

The timeline protects the final communication from rushed production. Testing closes major uncertainty before finishing, documentation, file assembly and exhibition setup.
  • 1Freeze nonessential changes and translate every brief requirement into a visible checklist item.
  • 1Photograph in one controlled session, assemble both documents and inspect every exported page.
  • 1Pack physical work, labels and display hardware, rehearse setup and confirm the Moodle upload status.
Prioritise evidence and verification over new features: document, assemble, reopen, inspect, upload, confirm and prepare the exhibition as a single controlled sequence.
Sia tip — Verify the exported artefact and submission receipt, not only the source file that looked correct on your computer.
Glossary

Key terms

Design Resolution
The stage at which major relationships are tested and the work is refined toward a coherent final outcome.
Documentation
Photographs, scans, drawings and text that make a design and its development accessible for assessment.
Exhibition
A planned physical arrangement that communicates final work, development evidence and written context to viewers.
Verification
A deliberate check that files, physical items and submission status match the stated requirements.
FAQ

Synthesis, Documentation and Exhibition FAQ

When should iteration stop?

Stop introducing large untested features when there is not enough time to evaluate them. Resolve uncertainties central to concept, use and communication, then shift attention to finish, documentation, file reliability and exhibition setup.

What makes design documentation effective?

Use focused images with consistent lighting, useful angles, scale cues and contextual views that explain interaction. Select evidence rather than including every photograph, and ensure captions, annotations and printed type remain legible.

What should be checked after export?

Open the actual PDFs and inspect page order, image quality, crops, links, fonts, missing pages and journal orientation. Keep local copies, verify the upload status and check that the physical exhibition materials are packed separately.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Plan backward from the submission and exhibition. Make a risk list for structure, finish, fabrication, photography, printing, PDF assembly, transport and display. Close the highest impact design uncertainty first, then freeze content before final documentation. Photograph outcomes under consistent conditions and include views that explain scale, use and the relationship between 2D and 3D work.

Assemble the required documents, export and reopen them on another device. Check every page and preserve proof of upload. Lay out the exhibition at full size with clear labels distinguishing iterations from final outcomes. Read the Task 2 rubric and point to evidence for concept and research, development, execution, reflection and collaboration.

If evidence exists only in your memory, strengthen the journal, statement, photographs or display. Finish by recording what the closeout revealed about your future design practice. Create a closeout calendar from the immovable submission time, then reserve separate blocks for resolution, documentation, assembly, checking, transport and contingency.

A final week containing only making hides dependencies: photography may require a complete object, a statement may change after the display is tested, and a failed print may need another booking. Identify the last responsible moment for design changes and freeze content after it. New ideas discovered later should enter the reflection unless they correct a critical failure.

Run a resolution audit across concept, use, material, construction and finish. Rank open issues by consequence and uncertainty, and test the one capable of invalidating the outcome before polishing minor surfaces. Examine the two-dimensional and three-dimensional results together. Their relationship should be visible through shared reasoning, complementary roles or deliberate contrast, not merely asserted in the statement.

Document that connection with paired views, sequences or annotations. Plan photographs as evidence. Include an overall image, scale or context view, relevant detail and interaction sequence where appropriate. Use consistent lighting and background, correct colour cautiously and avoid edits that misrepresent material or construction.

Name files predictably and keep high-resolution masters separate from compressed submission copies. For documents, establish hierarchy and page order before fine styling. Export early, reopen the PDF, inspect every page at normal viewing size and confirm fonts, images, links, margins and orientation. Test the final file on another device and preserve the uploaded version and receipt.

Rehearse exhibition layout at full dimensions. Map viewer approach, sight lines, reading order, label placement, supports, cables and safety. Distinguish process evidence from resolved outcomes so the audience can follow development without mistaking a prototype for the final artefact. Ask a peer unfamiliar with the project to navigate the display silently, then revise points of confusion.

Complete a rubric evidence matrix only after the materials are assembled. Point each criterion to a page, object, image or passage and strengthen genuine gaps rather than relabelling weak evidence. Allow time for a final integrity check covering attribution, personal authorship, file identity and required components.

After submission, photograph the installed work and write a concise closeout reflection about what held, what compromised and what should change in the next studio. That final record turns delivery pressure into usable knowledge for future practice.
