A Life-Stage Investment Strategy

Asset allocation divides a portfolio across broad asset categories. A risk profile considers both willingness and capacity to bear loss. Longevity risk is the possibility of outliving retirement resources. Sequencing risk is harm caused by an unfavourable order of returns when cash flows occur. Rebalancing returns portfolio weights toward the chosen allocation.

A review trigger is a defined event or threshold that reopens the strategy. In investment strategy, the planning decision asks how asset allocation interacts with review trigger under the household constraint. Sequence the portfolio around its funding job. Near-term withdrawals require liquidity that does not depend on selling volatile assets after a fall, while longer-horizon spending can tolerate more variation.

Test the same returns in a different order whenever cash enters or leaves the portfolio. The implementation rule should name target weights, tolerance bands and a life-event trigger, allowing disciplined rebalancing without treating each market movement as a new strategy.

  • +1Risk Profile changes the reading: connect the portfolio to the goal horizon, preserve liquidity, diversify and review after life changes rather than market noise. Review Trigger supplies the counter-case or reopening signal.

The governing relationship is “Closing balance = opening balance multiplied by (1 + return) plus contributions minus withdrawals”.
Sia tip — Apply withdrawals after each return in the printed chronological order.

FAQ

A Life-Stage Investment Strategy FAQ

Why does return order matter during withdrawals?

For the life-stage strategy, Closing balance = opening balance multiplied by (1 + return) plus contributions minus withdrawals Asset allocation divides a portfolio across broad asset categories. With asset allocation defined, Show the relevant period and unit before interpreting the output.

How do capacity and willingness differ?

For the life-stage strategy, A risk profile considers both willingness and capacity to bear loss. With asset allocation defined, Longevity risk is the possibility of outliving retirement resources. When risk profile is reviewed, Together they explain why the apparent shortcut can give the wrong planning answer.

Which life event should reopen asset allocation?

For the life-stage strategy, Sequencing risk is harm caused by an unfavourable order of returns when cash flows occur. With asset allocation defined, The response is to connect the portfolio to the goal horizon, preserve liquidity, diversify and review after life changes rather than market noise, then test a less favourable assumption before committing.

What keeps a long-term strategy implementable?

For the life-stage strategy, Rebalancing returns portfolio weights toward the chosen allocation. With asset allocation defined, A review trigger is a defined event or threshold that reopens the strategy. When risk profile is reviewed, These ideas supply the implementation condition and the point at which the plan should be reopened.

Connect the portfolio to the goal horizon, preserve liquidity, diversify and review after life changes rather than market noise. Revise the unit by answering “Which life event should reopen asset allocation?” and then “What keeps a long-term strategy implementable?” without notes.
