Project Fundamentals and the Project Lifecycle
Week 1 sets the vocabulary the whole course is written in: the PMBOK definition of a project, the five process groups and the level-of-effort lifecycle, and the difference between a Methodology, a Technique and a Tool. This recall — process-group names, what happens in initiation, project-versus-operations — is prime material for the final Individual Knowledge Quiz, and the one numeric Week-1 tool, Multicriteria Decision Analysis, seeds the option-selection judgement used later in scope and methods.

Multicriteria Decision Analysis: rank three options by weighted score

Do the five process groups happen one after another?
No. Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Controlling and Closing overlap along the level-of-effort curve rather than running as strict sequential phases — Planning effort ramps up early, Executing peaks in the middle, and Monitoring & Controlling runs in parallel across the whole lifecycle.
