Technology Critique and Rationalisation

This chapter places generative AI within social and economic relations, then connects that analysis to Weber's theory of rationalisation. Marxist questions foreground machinery, accumulation, labour control and ownership. Weberian questions foreground calculability, formal rules and bureaucratic authority.

Comparing the frameworks shows why technical capacity never determines institutional use and why efficiency is itself a value-laden mode of judgment. The technology is analysed through choices about investment, workplace control, hidden labour, data and the distribution of productivity gains. Hype is also an institutional practice when forecasts attract capital or present one path of adoption as inevitable.

Weber adds a different mechanism: formal criteria make cases comparable and support predictable administration, yet they can exclude substantive values and obscure responsibility behind procedure. Automation can therefore expand rather than remove bureaucracy because classification, monitoring, maintenance and review all intensify.

A sound comparison assigns these mechanisms distinct explanatory work before asking how they reinforce one another.

Q [4 marks]. What does a Weberian account reveal about a rule-based public decision system? The four marks used here are an original learning aid, not a published university assessment scheme.

  • 1Identify the promise of consistency under general rules.
  • 1Explain how criteria make cases calculable and comparable.
  • 1Test what substantive values the model excludes.
  • 1Assess legitimacy, responsibility and review.
The system can strengthen predictability and reduce personal favour, but it embeds choices about what counts, expands classification and can make authority appear technically inevitable. Review must address criteria and responsibility, not only computational accuracy.
Sia tip — Efficiency is a criterion selected by institutions. State what it measures and what it leaves outside the calculation.
Glossary

Key terms

Machinery
Technology organised within production relations that can reorganise labour, skill and control.
Rationalisation
The growing organisation of social life through calculation, rules, specialised offices and predictability.
Disenchantment
Weber's description of a modern world increasingly organised without traditional or religious authority.
Formal rationality
Decision-making according to calculable general rules rather than case-specific substantive values.
Labour process
The organisation and control of work through which production is carried out.
FAQ

Technology Critique and Rationalisation FAQ

Why analyse AI through capitalism rather than technology alone?

Technical capacity does not decide why a system is funded, where it is deployed or whose costs it shifts. A capitalist analysis follows competition, ownership, labour control and accumulation. It asks which actor chooses the system, which objective it serves and how gains and risks are distributed.

What is Weberian formal rationality?

Formal rationality organises decisions through general, calculable and predictable rules. It enables large-scale coordination and review, but can also exclude substantive values and make institutional choices appear neutral. The important question is not whether rules exist, but what kind of reason the rules recognise.

How should I compare Marx and Weber on technology?

Give each framework a distinct task. Marx can explain investment pressure, control over labour and distribution of gains. Weber can explain why metrics and procedures command obedience inside organisations. Then decide which mechanism is primary in the evidence and identify what both accounts leave underdeveloped.

How do I evaluate a prediction about generative AI?

Separate the speaker's forecast from present institutional evidence. Identify the claimed capability, the adoption decision, the economic interest behind the forecast and a date by which the prediction could be tested. Then compare the promised result with observed changes in labour, data collection and responsibility. This method permits scepticism without assuming that every technical claim is false.

Study strategy

Assessment move

For every technology example, separate capacity, institutional choice, economic objective and legal stabilisation. Write one Marxist question about ownership or labour and one Weberian question about calculation or authority. Practise turning claims about hype into testable comparisons between promise and present evidence.

When comparing theorists, avoid claiming that rationalisation automatically means capitalism; supply the institutional pathway. Finish applications by identifying a safeguard that responds to the diagnosed mechanism, such as contestable criteria, reasons for departure or accountable human judgment.

Use an evidence grid with four rows: claimed function, observed operation, affected worker or claimant, and actor with decision power. This keeps speculative capability separate from present institutional use. For a Marxian paragraph, trace who owns the system, why adoption is competitive, how the labour process changes and where benefits or verification costs go.

For a Weberian paragraph, identify the general rule, the data that make a person calculable, the office authorised to decide and the substantive value excluded. Compare remedies after comparing diagnoses: ownership rules address control, while reasons and review address bureaucratic authority. Revise any sentence that treats efficiency as self-explanatory by naming the output measured and the purpose displaced.

Finally, write a limitation paragraph that asks whether race, gender, ecology or colonial power changes the account rather than adding those concerns as an unconnected list.
