Assessment 1B: The Individual Briefing Paper

Assessment 1B is an individual briefing paper worth 20%, written from your experience of making and presenting the group documentary. The guide sets 1,500 to 1,700 words, excluding the cover page, contents and references, and the paper is due at the end of Week 8 on 20 September, with the 72-hour auto-extension available.

It has three essential elements: the purpose and rationale of the documentary, your own critical evaluation of the theory it applied, and a critical evaluation of GenAI as a learning co-pilot.

This chapter explains the suggested structure, from executive summary to references, shows how to turn a summary that lists what the paper does into one that states findings, offers a word budget sized to the rubric, and covers the STAR framework for the GenAI and teamwork sections.

It closes with the mistakes that cost marks, including retelling the video and citing ChatGPT.

Write a STAR account of one GenAI use

Q [4 marks]. During planning, a team asked a GenAI tool to suggest scenes for a documentary on youth unemployment. The tool suggested ten scenes, four of which the team used, and invented a statistic that the team then found was false. Write the four parts of a STAR account for the briefing paper. The practice weighting is assigned by AskSia and is not an official assessment scheme.

  • 1Situation: the team needed a storyboard quickly after choosing its issue and theory, and thought GenAI could speed up planning.
  • 1Task: to generate scene ideas that showed the issue and the organisation's role on screen.
  • 1Action: the team prompted the tool for scene ideas, reviewed all ten against the theory, and checked every factual claim against reliable sources.
  • 1Result: four scenes were used and an invented statistic was rejected, showing the tool helps with structure but cannot be trusted on facts.
A complete STAR account names the situation, the task, the action including verification, and a result that states both what was used and the lesson about GenAI's uses and limits.
Sia tip — End every STAR account with the lesson, not the outcome alone. The rubric rewards insight into the uses and limitations of GenAI, so state what the episode taught you about when to trust the tool.

FAQ

Assessment 1B: The Individual Briefing Paper FAQ

How long should the briefing paper be?

The guide sets 1,500 to 1,700 words, excluding the cover page, table of contents and references, with up to a 10% margin that is allowed but not encouraged. Graphics and tables count towards the limit; appendices do not, although the guide notes that briefing papers in practice rarely include them.

What does a good executive summary look like?

It presents the main findings of the paper, so a reader understands its substance without going further. The subject's sample summary shows findings and recommendations rather than sentences such as in this paper I discuss. Write it last, after the main body has settled what you actually found.

How is the briefing paper marked?

The rubric totals 100 points across nine criteria: issue analysis 20, theory evaluation 20, originality 15, theory understanding 10, GenAI evaluation 10, clarity of writing 10, style and structure 5, scholarly literature 5 and teamwork reflection 5. The paper also includes an English language milestone component that does not count towards the grade.

Can I write the briefing paper in the first person?

Yes. The guide allows first, second or third person, although the subject coordinator prefers the third person because a briefing paper is a formal business document. Whatever you choose, keep it consistent, and consider naming a specific audience, such as the focal organisation's top management, in your summary and introduction.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Draft the main body first and the executive summary last. Use the guide's question prompts as a checklist for the critical analysis, and write your GenAI and teamwork sections from notes you kept during the project. Before submitting, read each paragraph about the documentary and make sure it ends with a judgement about the theory or the tool rather than a description.

Read the rubric's nine criteria once more before submitting and mark the paragraph that answers each, so no criterion is left without a home.
