The Creative Brief: Its Sections and the Creative Process

The brief

Lecture 6 defines the creative brief as a roadmap that sets out a creative project’s strategy and bridges concept and execution, written by an account or project manager and pitched to the client and the creative team for approval.

The six sections

Project background with goals, features and benefits; the target audience; positioning with a perceptual map and an audience-side problem; the key message and USP; deliverables; and a timeline.

Assessment 1 turns these into a 4 to 5 minute pre-recorded pitch.

The creative process

Creativity means ideas that are fresh, unique and appropriate and that solve communication problems. Wallas and Young describe the stages from preparation or immersion to verification, fed by research early and testing late.

Weigh the pitch by its rubric before you plan your slides

Q [3 marks]. AskSia-authored practice. The pitch rubric gives 5 points to strategic foundation, 4 to audience, positioning and insight, 7 to creative message and USP and 4 to quality of pitch, out of 20. Work out each criterion’s share and say where the most preparation should go. The marks shown are an AskSia study allocation, not an official University marking scheme.

  • 1Shares: 5 of 20 = 25%, 4 of 20 = 20%, 7 of 20 = 35% and 4 of 20 = 20%, which add to 100%.
  • 1The creative message and USP criterion carries the largest share, more than a third of the mark.
  • 1Spend the most preparation on the key message and USP, but build them from sections 1 to 3, since that criterion rewards a message grounded in the problem, audience and positioning.
25%, 20%, 35% and 20%: the message and USP criterion matters most, and it depends on the sections before it.
Sia tip — Rehearse the USP sentence until it names both the insight and the advantage; the 7-point criterion asks for both.

FAQ

The Creative Brief: Its Sections and the Creative Process FAQ

What is the purpose of a creative brief?

Lecture 6 gives three: guidance, by giving the creative team clear direction; alignment, by putting every stakeholder, the client included, on the same page; and efficiency, by setting clear expectations. It is pitched to the client and the creatives before any creative work begins.

Who usually writes the creative brief?

Typically an account manager or project manager, working with the client and the creative team. In Assessment 1 you take that agency role and pitch the brief to the hypothetical client named in your group’s proposal.

What is the difference between a feature and a benefit?

A feature is a product attribute; a benefit answers the customer’s question of what is in it for them. The pitch brief asks for both in the project background section, and the key message should carry the benefit.

What is a USP in the pitch brief?

The unique selling proposition is the intersection between the core insight or key message and the brand’s distinctive advantage over its competitors. It belongs in the creative message section, which carries 7 of the 20 rubric points.

How is creativity defined in the lecture?

As the capacity to come up with ideas that are fresh, unique and appropriate and that solve communication problems. Academics stress originality and appropriateness, industry adds goal-directedness, and within agencies managers judge outcomes while creatives value reputation and awards.

What are the stages of Young’s creative process?

Immersion in the problem and its raw material, digestion of the information, incubation while the subconscious works, illumination when the idea arrives, and reality or verification, when the idea is studied and reshaped for practical use. Wallas’ four stages run preparation, incubation, illumination and verification.

Which penalties apply to the creative brief pitch video?

The brief lists 2-point deductions for a recording longer than 5 minutes, for presenters who are not visible and for a video link that is not public, and a mark of zero if the pitch targets a different company from the one in the project proposal. Late submission also loses 5% a day.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Draft the six sections as one sentence each before making any slides, then check that each sentence leads into the next. Time a full run-through and cut until it fits inside five minutes. Record a rehearsal with your camera on, because the brief deducts points if presenters are not visible. Before you record, check the four pitch penalties against your draft one by one.
