In-Class Quiz 1 Checkpoint

Week 6 is the first timed in-class quiz, which covers Weeks 1-5 and is closed to Generative AI. This checkpoint consolidates the whole first module — single-sum and multiple-cash-flow TVM, personal-finance ratios, loan amortisation, and bond and share valuation — into a fast formula-recall map and a timing plan. The emphasis is on rebuilding the core formulas from memory and executing them accurately under the clock, and on avoiding the recurring sign, rate and period errors rather than any proprietary quiz content.

What this chapter covers

  • 01Consolidated formula map for Weeks 1-5 (TVM, annuities, ratios, amortisation, bonds, shares)
  • 02The rate-and-period reflex: i = APR/m and n = years × m before every calculation
  • 03Highest-yield recall: annuity factor [1 − (1 + i)^−n]/i, PMT, bond price, Gordon P0 = D1/(i − g)
  • 04The three most common lost-mark errors: wrong periodic rate, wrong number of periods, sign slips
  • 05Time budgeting: spend time in proportion to marks; do quick recalls first
  • 06Discount/premium/par and i > g sanity checks built into each answer
  • 07GenAI-free technique: rebuild formulas rather than relying on any external tool
  • 08A pre-quiz self-test loop rather than passive re-reading

A rapid three-part recall drill (quiz pacing)

Q [3 marks]. Under timed conditions, answer three quick items: (a) convert a 12% APR compounded monthly to its Effective Annual Rate; (b) find the present value of a perpetuity paying $500 a year when the required return is 8%; (c) find the future value of $1,000 invested for 3 years at 6% compounded annually. (3 marks)
  • +1(a) EAR = (1 + APR/m)^m − 1 = (1 + 0.12/12)^12 − 1 = 1.01^12 − 1 = 1.12683 − 1 = 12.68%. The EAR exceeds the 12% APR because of monthly compounding.
  • +1(b) Level perpetuity PV = C/i = 500 / 0.08 = $6,250. No horizon term is needed because the payments continue forever.
  • +1(c) FV = PV(1 + i)^n = 1,000 × 1.06^3 = 1,000 × 1.19102 = $1,191.02.
EAR = 12.68%; perpetuity PV = $6,250; future value = $1,191.02. Each is a one-formula recall — the skill in Quiz 1 is executing them fast and picking the right rate and period.
Sia tip — Do the short recall items first to bank easy marks and build momentum, then return to any longer multi-step problems. Keep a running rate-and-period note (i = APR/m, n = years × m) at the top of your working so you never mix an annual rate with a monthly period.
Glossary

Key terms

Formula recall map
A single-page summary of the Weeks 1-5 formulas — single-sum PV/FV, annuity and perpetuity, amortisation instalment and balance, bond price and yields, DDM/Gordon and CAPM — rebuilt from memory so you can start any quiz question instantly.
Periodic rate and periods
The pair i = APR/m and n = years × m that must be set before any TVM calculation. Mismatching them (an annual rate with a monthly period count, or vice versa) is the single largest source of lost marks.
Time budgeting
Allocating quiz time in proportion to the marks on offer, and doing quick one-formula recalls before longer multi-step items, so you never run out of time on the easy marks.
Sanity check
A quick post-answer test — discount/premium/par for a bond, i > g for Gordon, order-of-magnitude on a PV — that catches errors before you move on. Building these in is faster than re-deriving from scratch.
GenAI-free technique
Because the in-class quizzes prohibit Generative AI, the required skill is rebuilding and applying formulas unaided under time pressure — which is exactly what rehearsing the formula recall map trains.
FAQ

In-Class Quiz 1 Checkpoint FAQ

What does Quiz 1 cover?

The first module, Weeks 1-5: single-sum and multiple-cash-flow time value of money, personal financial statements and health ratios, banking and loan amortisation, and bond and share valuation. It is timed, in-class and closed to Generative AI, so treat it like a mini-exam and rehearse the calculations unaided.

How should I revise for a timed, GenAI-free quiz?

Actively, not passively. Build a one-page formula map from memory, then self-test by working fresh problems against the clock rather than re-reading notes. The quiz rewards fast, accurate execution of formulas you can already reproduce, so practise reproducing them.

What are the most common ways students lose marks?

Three recurring errors: using the wrong periodic rate (forgetting i = APR/m), using the wrong number of periods (forgetting n = years × m), and sign or setup slips (for example discounting a bond at the coupon rate instead of the market yield). A rate-and-period note and a quick sanity check catch most of them.

Is the weight of Quiz 1 published?

No — the subject outline does not publish component weights. Confirm the weighting and the exact timing of Quiz 1 on your Canvas Assessments page, and plan your revision accordingly.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Build a one-page formula recall map for Weeks 1-5 and rehearse reproducing it from a blank sheet — the quiz is timed and GenAI-free, so unaided recall is the skill. Convert every rate and horizon first (i = APR/m, n = years × m) and keep that note visible while you work. Self-test with fresh problems under the clock rather than re-reading; do the quick one-formula items first to secure easy marks, then attack multi-step questions. Bake in a sanity check on each answer (discount/premium/par, i > g, order of magnitude). Confirm the quiz timing and weight on Canvas. Ask Sia to quiz you on mixed Weeks 1-5 items and time your recall.
