92526 Chap.13 Data Governance Components and Maturity
Data Governance Components and Maturity
Week 5 moves from handling data to governing it. Data governance is framed as the overall management of whether an organisation's data is available, usable, intact and secure, achieved through policies, processes and standards and through clear roles and ownership.
For sports organisations the module links good governance to better decisions, performance analysis and planning, and to the trust of athletes and other stakeholders.
The chapter sets out the seven components most frameworks share: stewardship of data, its quality, written policies and standards, security, legal compliance, the supporting architecture, and management of the data lifecycle.
It then explains the Capability Maturity Model's five levels, Initial, Repeatable, Defined, Managed and Optimizing, works a maturity rating for a regional rowing club, and connects the model to the Assessment 1 criterion that asks for a reasoned, model-based rating.

Place four club descriptions on the maturity staircase
- 1(a) Level 1, Initial: undocumented, inconsistent and reactive.
- 1(d) Level 2, Repeatable: some repeatable processes with consistent results, and the need for standards acknowledged.
- 1(b) Level 3, Defined: documented and standardised processes applied consistently across the organisation.
- 1(c) Level 4, Managed: performance metrics and governance built in from the planning stage.
Key terms
- Data governance
- The management of an organisation's data so that it stays available, usable, intact and secure.
- Data architecture
- The design of the systems that capture, integrate, store and analyse an organisation's data.
- Lifecycle management
- Managing data from its creation to archiving and deletion, with proper disposal processes.
- Optimizing level
- The top maturity level, where governance improves continuously and may influence industry standards.
Data Governance Components and Maturity FAQ
What is data governance in sport?
It is the overall management of an organisation's data so that it is available, usable, intact and secure. In sport that means policies, processes and standards for athletes' performance numbers, fan analytics and the club's financial records, plus clear roles, ownership and procedures for storing, sharing and using data, which supports better decisions and stakeholder trust.
What are the components of a data governance framework?
The module lists seven that most frameworks share: stewardship, which assigns roles; quality; written policies and standards; security against unauthorised access; legal and regulatory compliance; data architecture, the supporting systems; and data lifecycle management from creation to archiving and deletion.
What are the levels of the Capability Maturity Model?
Level 1, Initial, is undocumented, inconsistent and reactive. Level 2, Repeatable, has some consistent processes. Level 3, Defined, documents and standardises processes across the organisation. Level 4, Managed, tracks metrics and builds governance into planning. Level 5, Optimizing, improves continuously and may influence industry standards.
How is the maturity model used in Assessment 1?
Assessment 1 asks you to use the model to evaluate your fictional organisation's current governance maturity across several components, such as stewardship, quality, security or architecture.
Its rubric criterion is worth up to 6 points, and the top band asks for a comprehensive assessment that refers to aspects of data governance; a rating made without the model, or without enough support for its reasoning, falls to the Poor band, above only No marks.
What is data stewardship?
Data stewardship assigns specific people to roles in data management, such as who collects data, who maintains it and who reviews whether it is still fit for purpose, and it covers how data moves within and between organisations. Without it, nobody is accountable when data quality or security slips.
Exam move
Learn the seven components with one sport example each, and the five maturity levels with the distinguishing feature of each, until you can place a short description on the right level without hesitation. Then practise full ratings: take an organisation you know or invent one, rate three components with a piece of evidence for each, and propose the single change that would move it up one level.
Compare your rating with a classmate's and argue out any differences, because a rating is only as strong as the evidence and reasoning attached to it.
