Questions students ask in Unit 3
How do relevance and sufficiency differ when evaluating evidence?
Relevant evidence answers the claim being made; sufficient evidence carries the scale and certainty of that claim. One bus survey may directly address rider delay yet remain insufficient for a citywide conclusion. State both judgments separately so a useful source is not treated as either conclusive or worthless.
What information belongs in source attribution?
Include the feature that affects interpretation: expertise, institutional role, method, date, sample, or stake. A prestigious title alone is not analysis. Explain why the source's access or position strengthens one inference while leaving another uncertain, especially when a source reports its own program's success.
How can bias matter without disqualifying a source?
Bias identifies a perspective and incentive that shape selection or framing. A tenants' group may know recurring repair failures firsthand while lacking access to the landlord's complete cost records. Use its testimony for the conditions it can observe, corroborate broader claims, and avoid turning perspective into a synonym for falsehood.
What is the safest way to embed a quotation?
Create a grammatical sentence in which attribution, quoted language, and commentary have distinct roles. The quotation should provide the exact wording your inference depends on; surrounding syntax should identify who speaks and what the words do. Never let a dropped quotation stand where the warrant belongs.
When should a visual source be paired with another source?
Pair it when the display measures an outcome but not the mechanism, population, or lived consequence relevant to your claim. A heat map can locate temperature; transit-stop and pedestrian data can identify exposure. The second source should supply a missing dimension rather than repeat the same trend in another format.

Annotate each source with three compact labels: KNOWS for direct access, METHOD for how information was produced, and LIMIT for the nearest unsupported inference. Use those labels when selecting evidence so credibility remains claim-specific rather than a general reputation score.
Take one statistic and write three possible claims it could support. For each claim, identify the denominator, time window, and comparison needed. Reject the claim whose missing measurement cannot be repaired by commentary, then locate a complementary source for one remaining gap.
During quotation drills, cover your commentary after drafting. Read only the claim, attribution, and quoted words; predict the warrant a reader still needs. Reveal the explanation and revise it until it names the evidence's operation, the target claim, and the boundary of the inference.
