Read the relationship before the label

Diagnose the unit-specific relationship

The working question for cause-effect development is not “Can I recognize a term?” but “What relationship does this language establish, and where does the text limit that relationship?” Begin by marking the smallest useful evidence anchor. In Methods of Development, paraphrase the anchor without evaluation. When practicing Methods of Development, only after those two steps should you name the operation. In Unit 7, useful vocabulary includes causal chain, asserted consequence, multi-cause structure, and effect reversal.

One predictable failure is Temporal order is treated as causal proof. Its mechanism is specific: Because causal chain is treated as a label instead of evidence, the draft shows temporal order is treated as causal proof. The repair is equally specific: Replace the broad label with a bounded explanation that names the textual cue, applies causal chain, and stops at the inference the cue licenses.

A second failure is Asserted consequence lacks an intervening step. The revision creates asserted consequence lacks an intervening step; its use of asserted consequence changes the relationship the sentence must preserve.

Write one sentence using causal chain correctly, one sentence distinguishing it from asserted consequence, and one sentence explaining why multi-cause structure matters to an audience. Then invent a wrong interpretation that commits temporal order is treated as causal proof and repair it without changing the evidence.

This makes effect reversal operational: students can see that arrangement and scope are not cosmetic.

The working question for comparison-contrast development is not “Can I recognize a term?” but “What relationship does this language establish, and where does the text limit that relationship?” Begin by marking the smallest useful evidence anchor. In Unit 7, useful vocabulary includes comparison category, parallel criteria, point-by-point comparison, and unlike-category comparison.

One predictable failure is Comparison changes criteria between subjects. Its mechanism is specific: The revision creates comparison changes criteria between subjects; its use of comparison category changes the relationship the sentence must preserve. The repair is equally specific: Replace the broad label with a bounded explanation that names the textual cue, applies comparison category, and stops at the inference the cue licenses.

Write one sentence using comparison category correctly, one sentence distinguishing it from parallel criteria, and one sentence explaining why point-by-point comparison matters to an audience. Then invent a wrong interpretation that commits comparison changes criteria between subjects and repair it without changing the evidence.

In the first, make comparison category explicit; in the second, leave it for the reader to infer from selection and arrangement. Next, reverse the task: preserve the conclusion while changing parallel criteria.

Why empty chairs require a causal chain

Q. Cooling centers are advertised widely but remain underused. Which revision develops cause and effect most responsibly?
A. Residents do not care about heat safety.   B. Advertising failed, so the city should buy more advertising.   C. Limited hours, two-transfer routes, pet rules, and identification fears combine to make attendance difficult.   D. The centers were empty because the chairs were uncomfortable.
  • Step 1Begin with the outcome but do not treat it as its own explanation.
  • Step 2List barriers supported by interviews and operating conditions.
  • Step 3Show how the barriers combine rather than forcing one universal cause.
  • A · trapThis assigns motive without evidence.
  • B · trapThe premise is contradicted by unchanged attendance after publicity.
  • C · keyThe response identifies several supported mechanisms.
  • D · trapNo evidence identifies furniture as a cause.
Answer: C — “Limited hours, two-transfer routes, pet rules, and identification fears combine to make attendance difficult.”
Sia tip — A causal paragraph names the links between conditions and outcome, including alternative measurement explanations.
Glossary

Unit 7 working glossary

causal chain
A working term within cause-effect development. For causal chain, locate the precise cue, name the relationship it creates, and state the scope that the evidence permits. Distinguish it from asserted consequence; the two may appear together, but they do not perform the same reasoning job.
asserted consequence
A working term within cause-effect development. For asserted consequence, locate the precise cue, name the relationship it creates, and state the scope that the evidence permits. Distinguish it from multi-cause structure; the two may appear together, but they do not perform the same reasoning job.
multi-cause structure
A working term within cause-effect development. For multi-cause structure, locate the precise cue, name the relationship it creates, and state the scope that the evidence permits. Distinguish it from effect reversal; the two may appear together, but they do not perform the same reasoning job.
effect reversal
A working term within cause-effect development. For effect reversal, locate the precise cue, name the relationship it creates, and state the scope that the evidence permits. Distinguish it from causal chain; the two may appear together, but they do not perform the same reasoning job.
comparison category
A working term within comparison-contrast development. For comparison category, locate the precise cue, name the relationship it creates, and state the scope that the evidence permits. Distinguish it from parallel criteria; the two may appear together, but they do not perform the same reasoning job.
parallel criteria
A working term within comparison-contrast development. For parallel criteria, locate the precise cue, name the relationship it creates, and state the scope that the evidence permits. Distinguish it from point-by-point comparison; the two may appear together, but they do not perform the same reasoning job.
point-by-point comparison
A working term within comparison-contrast development. For point-by-point comparison, locate the precise cue, name the relationship it creates, and state the scope that the evidence permits. Distinguish it from unlike-category comparison; the two may appear together, but they do not perform the same reasoning job.
unlike-category comparison
A working term within comparison-contrast development. For unlike-category comparison, locate the precise cue, name the relationship it creates, and state the scope that the evidence permits. Distinguish it from comparison category; the two may appear together, but they do not perform the same reasoning job.
operational definition
A working term within definition and description development. For operational definition, locate the precise cue, name the relationship it creates, and state the scope that the evidence permits. Distinguish it from sensory description; the two may appear together, but they do not perform the same reasoning job.
FAQ

Questions students ask in Unit 7

How should I choose among cause-effect, comparison, and definition?

Choose the method that makes the needed inference visible. Cause-effect traces a mechanism, comparison establishes a meaningful dimension, and definition sets category boundaries. A topic does not dictate one method; the same transit proposal may require causal analysis of delay and comparison of rider impacts.

What keeps causal development from becoming a simple sequence?

Identify the mechanism connecting conditions to outcomes and consider credible alternatives. Events occurring before a result are not automatically causes. Strong development distinguishes necessary, contributing, and sufficient factors, then proposes evidence that could separate the preferred explanation from coincidence or measurement effects.

Which comparison dimensions are rhetorically useful?

Use dimensions tied to the decision: cost over time, access under actual conditions, reliability across seasons, or cognitive work required. Comparing whatever facts are easy to count produces parallel description without judgment. State why the selected dimension matters to the audience's criterion before interpreting similarities and differences.

How can a definition argument avoid dictionary dependence?

Operationalize the contested term through observable features, boundaries, and consequences. Defining a public trial as accountable might require a stated duration, measures, suspension rule, and decision owner. A dictionary can supply denotation, but the argument must justify why these criteria fit the practical dispute.

When do denotation and connotation require separate analysis?

Separate them when a word's literal reference remains stable while its evaluative force changes expectations. Resilient can denote recovery yet praise residents in a way that hides institutional neglect. Explain who gains credit, who absorbs cost, and what policy inference the connotation encourages.

Study strategy

A durable study loop for Unit 7

Take one civic claim and develop it three ways on separate cards: causal chain, controlled comparison, and operational definition. Note what each version reveals and what it cannot prove. Select the route whose missing inference matches the paragraph's actual burden.

For causal practice, build a mechanism diagram containing condition, intermediate step, outcome, rival explanation, and discriminating evidence. Convert the diagram into prose only after every arrow has support. This prevents chronological language from masquerading as causal analysis.

For comparison drills, write the decision criterion above a two-column table before entering evidence. Reject rows that are interesting but irrelevant to that criterion. Finish with a sentence explaining whether the difference changes degree, category, feasibility, or responsibility.
