Read the relationship before the label

Diagnose the unit-specific relationship

The working question for coherence and reference chains is not “Can I recognize a term?” but “What relationship does this language establish, and where does the text limit that relationship?” Begin by marking the smallest useful evidence anchor. In Line of Reasoning and Coherence, paraphrase the anchor without evaluation. When practicing Line of Reasoning and Coherence, only after those two steps should you name the operation. In Unit 6, useful vocabulary includes pronoun reference chain, lexical repetition, parallel structure, and cross-paragraph coherence.

A second failure is Lexical repetition creates false unity. At the point where lexical repetition should narrow the inference, lexical repetition creates false unity leaves two incompatible readings alive.

Write one sentence using pronoun reference chain correctly, one sentence distinguishing it from lexical repetition, and one sentence explaining why parallel structure matters to an audience. Then invent a wrong interpretation that commits pronoun chain changes its referent and repair it without changing the evidence.

In the first, make pronoun reference chain explicit; in the second, leave it for the reader to infer from selection and arrangement. Next, reverse the task: preserve the conclusion while changing lexical repetition.

This makes cross-paragraph coherence operational: students can see that arrangement and scope are not cosmetic.

The working question for transitions and evidence links is not “Can I recognize a term?” but “What relationship does this language establish, and where does the text limit that relationship?” Begin by marking the smallest useful evidence anchor. In Unit 6, useful vocabulary includes transitional element, evidence-introduction transition, relationship marker, and section bridge.

One predictable failure is Transition marks contrast where cause is needed. Its mechanism is specific: At the point where transitional element should narrow the inference, transition marks contrast where cause is needed leaves two incompatible readings alive. The repair is equally specific: Replace the broad label with a bounded explanation that names the textual cue, applies transitional element, and stops at the inference the cue licenses.

A second failure is Evidence introduction has no claim anchor. A reader can spot evidence introduction has no claim anchor when evidence-introduction transition is named after the conclusion rather than used to reach it.

Two doors and one unequal arrival

Q. Why must an analysis distinguish unequal arrival from equal service before recommending an accessible garden path?
A. The distinction prevents the claim from accusing staff and keeps the remedy fitted to the approach.   B. The distinction proves that exterior design never matters.   C. The distinction establishes that both doors must look identical.   D. The distinction removes cost and historic fabric from consideration.
  • Step 1State the observed hierarchy of the approaches.
  • Step 2Limit the claim by acknowledging equal treatment inside.
  • Step 3Test proposed remedies against the precise problem plus cost and preservation constraints.
  • A · keyIt preserves scope and leads to a proportionate design.
  • B · trapThe argument is precisely about the exterior route's message.
  • C · trapThe proposal explicitly preserves physical differences.
  • D · trapThose constraints determine the selected remedy.
Answer: A — “The distinction prevents the claim from accusing staff and keeps the remedy fitted to the approach.”
Sia tip — A missing middle claim often turns a fair observation into an overstatement or an unbuildable remedy.

Unit 6 working glossary

pronoun reference chain
A working term within coherence and reference chains. For pronoun reference chain, locate the precise cue, name the relationship it creates, and state the scope that the evidence permits. Distinguish it from lexical repetition; the two may appear together, but they do not perform the same reasoning job.
lexical repetition
A working term within coherence and reference chains. For lexical repetition, locate the precise cue, name the relationship it creates, and state the scope that the evidence permits. Distinguish it from parallel structure; the two may appear together, but they do not perform the same reasoning job.
parallel structure
A working term within coherence and reference chains. For parallel structure, locate the precise cue, name the relationship it creates, and state the scope that the evidence permits. Distinguish it from cross-paragraph coherence; the two may appear together, but they do not perform the same reasoning job.
cross-paragraph coherence
A working term within coherence and reference chains. For cross-paragraph coherence, locate the precise cue, name the relationship it creates, and state the scope that the evidence permits. Distinguish it from pronoun reference chain; the two may appear together, but they do not perform the same reasoning job.
transitional element
A working term within transitions and evidence links. For transitional element, locate the precise cue, name the relationship it creates, and state the scope that the evidence permits. Distinguish it from evidence-introduction transition; the two may appear together, but they do not perform the same reasoning job.
evidence-introduction transition
A working term within transitions and evidence links. For evidence-introduction transition, locate the precise cue, name the relationship it creates, and state the scope that the evidence permits. Distinguish it from relationship marker; the two may appear together, but they do not perform the same reasoning job.
relationship marker
A working term within transitions and evidence links. For relationship marker, locate the precise cue, name the relationship it creates, and state the scope that the evidence permits. Distinguish it from section bridge; the two may appear together, but they do not perform the same reasoning job.
section bridge
A working term within transitions and evidence links. For section bridge, locate the precise cue, name the relationship it creates, and state the scope that the evidence permits. Distinguish it from transitional element; the two may appear together, but they do not perform the same reasoning job.
narrative development
A working term within narration and reflective development. For narrative development, locate the precise cue, name the relationship it creates, and state the scope that the evidence permits. Distinguish it from experiential detail; the two may appear together, but they do not perform the same reasoning job.
FAQ

Questions students ask in Unit 6

What makes a sequence of relevant paragraphs a line of reasoning?

Each paragraph must create a result the next paragraph needs. One may define the decision criterion, another test evidence against it, and a third address the strongest limitation. Relevance to the same topic is insufficient when paragraphs could be rearranged freely without changing the argument's logic.

How do reference chains affect coherence?

Pronouns and repeated nouns carry actors, evidence, and claims across sentences. A smooth pronoun can silently shift from three surveyed families to an entire district. Name the referent again when scale or agency changes, even if repetition sounds less elegant, so the inference remains accountable.

When is a transition logically wrong rather than stylistically weak?

A transition is wrong when it names a relationship the surrounding claims do not support. However signals contrast, therefore asserts consequence, and meanwhile often coordinates concurrent developments. Test the connector as a miniature claim; if you cannot defend that relation, reorganize the evidence before choosing a smoother word.

How can narration advance an analytical argument?

A narrated event can reveal a change in knowledge, role, or criterion. Select moments whose sequence produces the reflection: expectation, disruption, recognition, and revised judgment. Chronology alone does not create development; the writer must explain why the later understanding could not have existed in the same form before the event.

What is the quickest way to locate a missing reasoning step?

Write the last sentence of each paragraph in a vertical list. Add because or therefore between neighboring entries and state the implied relation. Where the sentence sounds false or vague, the draft may need a warrant, a reordered paragraph, or a claim that names the intermediate inference.

Study strategy

A durable study loop for Unit 6

Reverse-outline a published argument with verbs rather than topics: defines, distinguishes, measures, concedes, revises, concludes. Draw arrows only where one result supplies the next move. Any isolated box marks material that may be informative yet structurally unnecessary.

Run a reference audit on one paragraph by drawing a line from every this, they, these records, and such a policy to its precise antecedent. Mark each line that crosses a change in actor or population, then replace the pronoun with a bounded noun phrase.

Remove all transitions from a draft and write the intended relation in the margin before restoring words. Choose connectors only after naming cause, concession, comparison, sequence, or consequence. If no relation fits, split or relocate the evidence rather than decorating adjacency.
