Audience Research, Consumer Behaviour and Box Office Data

No film is for everyone

The course puts film promotion into one instruction: find the right audience for the film. The reading on target audiences defines an audience first by gender and age range, then by socioeconomic status, urban or rural setting, race, family status, theatre-going habit and special interests.

Its age brackets run from young children with a parent through tweens, teens and young adults to the over fifty-fours, and it identifies eighteen to thirty-four as the largest cinema-going segment, which also makes it the most contested.

Informed guesses about who will queue

Identifying an audience is admitted to be a guess, but an informed one.

The reading asks who would stand in a queue outside a cinema on a cold night for this film, and then asks why those people and not others. The answer comes from marketable elements: genre, concept, tone, how far the audience sees itself in the protagonist, subject matter, stand-alone hooks such as music, special interests the story touches, and source material that arrives with its own fans.

It adds a demand for realism about how the film compares with similar titles.

How people decide to buy

The course starts from the classic AIDA sequence and extends it for film by adding what happens after the ticket, because sharing decides the second week.

It then contrasts a search-based path, in which a curious viewer looks for information before buying, with a fan-based path led by opinion leaders and live hosts.

The adoption curve shows who comes first and who waits: the published shares run from innovators at the left through the early and late majorities to laggards, and the course pairs them with habitual, value-driven, specialist and follower cinemagoers.

Information overload

The course quantifies the noise a campaign must cut through: thousands of brand exposures a day, a few hundred of them advertising, about a hundred noticed and only a handful recalled.

The practical conclusion is that targeting is the price of being remembered at all.

Research areas and tools

Film research combines primary and secondary data and qualitative and quantitative methods across social and economic trends, customers, genres, release dates and past box office, test and exit screenings, and the market value of artists.

The course introduces professional apps for real-time Mainland data, international sources for North American and global grosses, and a paid third-party service for Hong Kong figures, and it sets the scene with the regional shape of the world box office and the year's Hong Kong total, which fell compared with the year before.

Choose the hooks for a sports drama

Q [6 marks]. AskSia-authored practice. A Hong Kong drama follows a middle-aged amateur marathon runner training for one last race. Name the core audience and the three marketable elements you would lead with, and say which one you would not rely on. The marks shown are an AskSia study allocation, not a University marking scheme.

  • 2Define the audience by age, gender and one lifestyle trait.
  • 3Select three marketable elements and justify each.
  • 1Name the element to avoid leaning on.
The core audience is twenty-five to fifty-four year olds of both genders who run or follow fitness, with a secondary pull on older viewers who identify with the protagonist's age. Lead with protagonist appeal, because this audience sees itself in an ordinary runner rather than a star; with special interest, because running clubs and race communities can be reached directly; and with tone, a warm and funny drama rather than a solemn one, which widens the audience. Do not rely on concept alone: a comeback story is familiar, so without the specific protagonist and the running community it gives the audience no reason to choose this film.
Sia tip — Always justify an audience with the film's own hooks. If the reason given would fit any film in the genre, the audience has not yet been defined.
Glossary

Key terms

Psychographic Variable
A trait describing how people think and live, such as personality, attitudes, values, interests, lifestyle and buying behaviour.
Marketable Element
A feature of a film, such as genre, tone, subject or source material, that attracts a particular audience and can be held up by a campaign.
Adoption Curve
The distribution of adopters over time, from innovators and early adopters to the early and late majority and laggards, used to plan how word of mouth carries a film.
Word of Mouth
Recommendation passed from viewers to others after a screening, which the course treats as increasingly decisive for box office.
Exit Research
Research carried out with viewers as they leave a screening, used to test what they liked and what they would tell a friend.
Box Office Data
Figures on takings, screenings, seats and occupancy, supplied by professional apps and third-party services and used to plan and adjust a release.
Fan Path
A purchase route in which an opinion leader or live host turns attention into loyalty, so the viewer buys without first searching for information.
FAQ

Audience Research, Consumer Behaviour and Box Office Data FAQ

Why is the eighteen to thirty-four group both attractive and risky?

It is the largest cinema-going segment, so it supplies the audiences big releases depend on. For exactly that reason most major titles compete for it, and a small film targeting it head on is outspent in media and outscheduled in cinemas unless it has a sharper reason for those viewers to choose it.

What is a marketable element?

It is a hook in the film that recruits a particular audience: its genre, concept, tone, a protagonist the audience identifies with, its subject, extra elements such as music, special interests it touches, or source material with existing fans. A campaign holds up the hooks that match the target and ignores the rest.

Where do distributors get box office numbers?

Mainland distributors use professional apps that show real-time takings, screening share and occupancy. North American and international grosses come from established reporting services. Hong Kong figures come from an independent third-party company on subscription, which is why published local numbers are often estimates rather than official releases.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Pick two current films of the same genre and write each one's target audience in a single sentence with age, gender and one lifestyle trait. Then list the marketable elements each campaign actually uses. The difference between the two lists is usually the difference between their positions.
