AF7420 Chap.3 Film Distribution, Cinema Booking and Revenue Splits
Film Distribution, Cinema Booking and Revenue Splits
What distribution is for
The course defines theatrical distribution as the scheduling, management and process operation that carries a finished film to cinema screens, aimed at maximum box office revenue.
The work spans acquiring or representing rights, booking cinemas and dates, allocating prints across circuits and regions, advertising and publicity, public and customer relations, logistics and box office monitoring. On the Mainland a lead distributor sets strategy and runs national activity while co-distributors take on regions.
A distribution company is organised into international sales, distribution, advertising creative, marketing and PR, and media buying under one general manager.
Booking and the contract behind it
Cinemas book films in three ways: open booking on a renewable weekly contract, block booking of a fixed holiday date with a circuit, and blind booking of the biggest titles before they are seen.
A real Hong Kong booking letter shows the details that matter: rental shares that step with the film's takings, a week defined by a count of regular shows, a minimum run, daily takings reports, payment terms and a ban on cutting the film.
Business models are risk models
The course lists buyout, revenue sharing, a minimum guarantee combined with sharing, hiring a distribution agency, cooperative release with cinemas or ticketing platforms, and self-distribution.
Each allocates risk differently. A buyout loads it on the distributor; sharing spreads it; a guarantee turns part of it into a wager on the final gross.
The Mainland split
Tax and the film fund come off the gross first.
Of what remains, cinemas and circuit keep the larger share and producer and distributor divide the rest, with the distribution fee taken from their side, so producers recover only around a third of gross. The course contrasts this with American mainstream splits favouring the studio, traces the difference to the Paramount Decree and its end, and shows independent and art-film splits favouring exhibitors.
It also shows splits that fall week by week and splits that rise with box office tiers.
Recoupment
A published waterfall for an independent feature follows income through distributors, the sales agent and the producer, each recouping costs and taking fees before the budget is repaid, and shows how little can be left for investors even from a respectable worldwide gross.
The chapter closes on who distributes in Hong Kong, the five types of Mainland distributor, the Hollywood majors and the independent that changed the rules.

- Digital Cinema Package
- The standard digital file set, with its decryption keys, in which a film is delivered to cinemas for projection.
- Recoupment Waterfall
- The order in which income from every window passes through distributors, sales agent and producer, each recovering costs and fees before any profit is shared.
- Paramount Decree
- The 1948 United States ruling that forced the major studios to separate distribution from exhibition, formally ended in 2020.
- Co-distributor
- A distributor that takes on part of a release, such as a region or group of provinces, under a lead distributor's strategy.
Film Distribution, Cinema Booking and Revenue Splits FAQ
Why do producers recover so little of a Mainland gross?
Several parties are paid first. Tax and the film fund are deducted from gross, the exhibition side keeps the larger share of what remains, and the distribution fee comes out of the producer side's share. The course puts the producer's final recovery at around a third of gross, before production and promotion costs are repaid.
What is the difference between open and block booking?
Open booking is a short renewable contract, normally one week from a Thursday opening, renewed only if takings justify it. Block booking fixes a holiday or golden week date in advance, usually through an exclusive arrangement with a circuit, and suits titles strong enough to claim a peak slot before release.
Why can a split change during a run?
Because the contract can tie it to time or to success. In one course example the producer's share fell week by week, rewarding the cinema for keeping a fading film on screen; in another it rose with box office tiers, rewarding the producer for delivering a hit. Always check which rule applies before quoting a percentage.
Assessment move
Take one headline gross from a recent Mainland release and run it through the course split on paper: tax and fund, exhibition share, distribution fee. Then write one sentence on what the producer side keeps and one on what still has to be repaid. Doing this twice fixes the order of deductions for good.
