ACC1701B Overview

Accounting for Decision Makers
— Follow every business event from recognition through the statements to the decision it changes.
  • National University of Singapore
  • Semester 1, AY2026/27
  • Level 1
  • Comprehensive final scope
  • Two-hour digital final

What ACC1701B builds

ACC1701B introduces financial accounting as a system for turning business events into information used by investors, creditors and other external decision makers. The course begins with the purpose and links of the principal financial statements, then develops the accounting cycle that produces them.

  • Assessed across the whole semester The final examination carries 50% and includes multiple-choice questions and short problems.
  • Direction comes before arithmetic Classify the account, statement or cash-flow section before applying a formula.
  • Every answer needs a control Use an independent reconciliation to expose a reversed sign or missing amount.
  • Interpretation completes the chain Connect the corrected number to a user decision and name what it cannot prove.

What ACC1701B covers

Eleven source-led chapters build from statement purpose and transaction mechanics through operating accounts, financing, cash flows and integrated analysis.

01

Financial Statements and Decision Use

Choose the report, trace the bridge numbers and distinguish performance from cash

Four reports, four questions

Financial reporting separates questions that are easy to blur under time pressure. The income statement measures performance across a period through revenue and expenses.

  • Purpose of external financial reporting
  • Income statement over a period
  • Financial position at a date
  • Changes in equity as a bridge
  • Cash flows by activity
  • Linked-statement reconciliation
02

Transactions, Debits and Credits

Classify each account and direction before applying the debit-credit convention

Direction before side

Double-entry starts with the business event, not with a memorised journal. Decide whether an event has occurred, name the affected accounts, classify each account, and determine whether it increased or decreased.

  • Economic events and transactions
  • Account families
  • Normal balances
  • Double-entry equality
  • Journal entries
  • Trial-balance limitations
03

Adjusting Accounts at Period End

Resolve accruals, deferrals and estimates without inventing another cash movement

Cash and recognition separate

Period-end adjustments record economic activity in the period when it is earned or incurred even when cash moved at another time.

  • Accrual accounting
  • Expense deferrals
  • Revenue deferrals
  • Accrued expenses
  • Accrued revenue
  • Depreciation and estimates
04

Completing the Accounting Cycle

Carry adjusted balances through the statements and close temporary accounts

Dependency, reporting and reset

The accounting cycle is ordered because every later stage consumes the output of an earlier one. Transactions are analysed, journalised and posted before balances can be listed.

  • Adjusted trial balance
  • Statement preparation order
  • Net-income bridge
  • Retained-earnings roll-forward
  • Closing entries
  • Post-closing trial balance
05

Receivables, Loss Allowance and Cash

Reach an expected-loss target, read collection speed and reconcile two cash records

Expected collection and controlled cash

A credit sale records revenue and a receivable before collection is certain. Reporting the invoice total as if every customer will pay would overstate the expected resource.

  • Credit sales and receivables
  • Expected credit loss
  • Aging schedule
  • Allowance adjustment
  • Receivables turnover
  • Bank reconciliation
06

Financial Statement Integrity and Controls

Trace error direction through reports and design a control that interrupts the cause

Correct the number and the process

Reliable reporting depends on complete and accurate entries plus processes that protect assets and retain evidence. An error may result from misunderstanding, omission or processing failure.

  • Financial statement integrity
  • Error and fraud
  • Fraud triangle
  • Preventive controls
  • Detective controls
  • Statement and ratio distortion
07

Inventory and Cost of Sales

Resolve ownership, allocate cost layers, test recoverability and interpret turnover

Ownership comes before valuation

Inventory work begins by identifying goods the company controls.

  • Inventory ownership
  • Periodic and perpetual systems
  • FIFO cost layers
  • Weighted-average cost
  • Net realisable value
  • Inventory turnover
08

Current Liabilities and Long-Term Assets

Split obligations by maturity and allocate long-term asset cost across use

Recognition and maturity are separate

A liability is recognised when a present obligation exists and can be measured. Classification then asks when settlement is due within the reporting framework and operating cycle.

  • Present obligations
  • Current classification
  • Current portion of debt
  • PPE initial cost
  • Straight-line depreciation
  • Asset disposal
09

Equity Financing and Dividends

Separate owner contributions, earned profit and distributions in the equity roll-forward

Equity movements have different sources

Equity is the residual claim after liabilities, but a change in total equity can come from owner financing, business performance or distributions. A share issue increases cash and contributed capital.

  • Share capital
  • Share issues
  • Retained earnings
  • Cash dividends
  • Treasury shares
  • Equity roll-forward
10

Statement of Cash Flows

Classify cash by purpose and reconcile accrual profit to operating cash

Cash source matters as much as cash change

The statement of cash flows explains how opening cash became ending cash.

  • Operating activities
  • Investing activities
  • Financing activities
  • Indirect method
  • Working-capital directions
  • Cash reconciliation
11

Financial Statement Analysis

Compute ratio families, identify accounting drivers and qualify the business conclusion

Start with the decision question

Ratio analysis compresses statement relationships into measures of profitability, liquidity, efficiency, leverage and cash quality. Profit margin asks how much profit remains from revenue.

  • Profit margin
  • Return on assets
  • Current ratio
  • Turnover ratios
  • Debt ratio
  • Cash quality

Transactions are analysed, recorded through debit and credit entries, posted, adjusted at period end, assembled into statements and closed before the next period begins.

How the operating topics connect

Receivables add collection risk to credit revenue, so the course pairs gross balances with an expected-loss allowance and examines collection speed.

Cash introduces control and reconciliation because the bank and the ledger observe the same resource through different records. Inventory requires decisions about ownership, systems, cost-flow assumptions and recoverability. Current liabilities and long-term assets add maturity classification and cost allocation.

Equity separates owner financing from earned performance and distributions.

Why cash flows and ratios come last

The statement of cash flows reorganises cash movements by operating, investing and financing purpose, then reconciles accrual profit with operating cash. Financial statement analysis uses profitability, liquidity, efficiency and leverage ratios to support decisions.

A ratio is never the start of the answer: the accounting event changes a balance, the balance changes a ratio, and context determines what that movement means.

What the assessments reward

The midterm focuses on the first part of the sequence through Week 6. The final is comprehensive and mixes multiple-choice questions with short problems.

Strong preparation therefore combines quick classification with fully worked chains. For every problem, name the account family or statement section, show the arithmetic, reconcile to an independent control and state the decision effect.

The course materials also place ethics and financial statement integrity inside the assessed scope, so a technically balanced entry can still be wrong when recognition, timing or classification is misleading.

  • 2Identify the first wrong account and correction.
  • 2Trace the correction through profit, assets and equity.
  • 2Recompute the leverage direction and state the decision effect.
Debit Repair Expense and credit Equipment $15,000. Assets, profit and equity each fall by $15,000 before tax, while cash and liabilities do not change because the original cash payment was already recorded. With liabilities unchanged and assets lower, a liabilities-to-assets debt ratio rises. The original treatment therefore made performance and financial position look stronger and leverage look safer than the corrected statements support.
Sia tip — Correct the first wrong account before computing a ratio; otherwise the calculation only makes the error look precise.

FAQ

ACC1701B FAQ

How is this course assessed?

Class Participation carries 20%, the Midterm Test carries 30%, and the Final examination carries 50%. The weights sum to 100%. The published assessment page does not state a hurdle or minimum mark, so students should confirm any current pass condition on Canvas rather than infer one.

What is the final examination format?

The final is a 120-minute closed-book secure digital examination with multiple-choice questions and short problems. It is comprehensive across lectures, tutorials, self-study and assigned readings. One A4-size cheat sheet printed or handwritten on both sides is allowed under the published instructions.

What does the midterm test cover?

The midterm is a 90-minute closed-book digital test of 30 multiple-choice questions. The dedicated test page specifies lectures, self-study and assigned readings from Weeks 1 to 6, together with Tutorials 1 to 6. One single-sided A4 cheat sheet is allowed.

Why can a balanced trial balance still be wrong?

Equal debit and credit totals prove arithmetic equality only. The wrong account, wrong amount, wrong period or a completely omitted transaction can still leave the columns equal. Use recognition, classification and reconciliation checks rather than treating balance as proof of correct accounting.

How should adjusting entries be approached?

Start by identifying whether cash moved before or after recognition. A deferral releases an existing asset or liability, while an accrual creates the missing statement-of-position account. Then compute only the current-period amount and state the effect on profit and the related balance.

What is the safest way to prepare for mixed short problems?

Practise without chapter labels. For each problem, first classify the account or statement section, then calculate with visible signs, reconcile to an independent control, and finish with the decision effect. This sequence catches direction errors before they propagate through several statements.

Are mock or past papers available in the captured materials?

Two mock-midterm solution files are available, and the course page describes two practice mock tests. It explicitly warns that their content or format may not exactly match the actual midterm. No past final examination file appears in the reviewed course folder.

What belongs on the permitted cheat sheet?

Use compact decision routes, normal-balance directions, adjustment patterns, reconciliations and ratio formulas. A copied worked example is less useful when the account names change. The best sheet helps you classify an unfamiliar event and verify the result rather than recognise one familiar question.

Chapter questions

Questions students ask in each ACC1701B chapter

Why are four statements needed?
Each report isolates a different decision dimension: performance, changes in owner claims, resources and obligations, or cash movements. Their bridge numbers connect them without making the statements interchangeable, so the user's question determines where analysis begins. Chapter 01 · Financial Statements and Decision Use
Does debit mean bad?
No. Debit and credit are account sides, not favourable and unfavourable outcomes. Their effect depends on the account family and whether that account is increasing or decreasing. Chapter 02 · Transactions, Debits and Credits
Why does an adjustment usually avoid cash?
The timing difference means cash was recorded earlier or will be recorded later. The adjustment corrects recognition for the current period, so adding another cash entry would record the payment or receipt twice. Chapter 03 · Adjusting Accounts at Period End
Why prepare statements after adjustments?
Adjustments complete current-period recognition. Preparing statements earlier omits earned revenue, incurred expense or required estimates and carries those errors through profit, equity and financial position. Chapter 04 · Completing the Accounting Cycle
Why is the allowance not the expense?
The ledger may already contain an allowance balance. Expense is the adjustment needed to move that existing balance to the required closing target, including the effect of any prior write-offs. Chapter 05 · Receivables, Loss Allowance and Cash
Can fraud use balanced entries?
Yes. Equal debits and credits do not prove that an event occurred or was classified and timed honestly. Fraud can use a balanced entry to conceal early revenue or improper capitalisation. Chapter 06 · Financial Statement Integrity and Controls
Does FIFO require the physical oldest unit to sell first?
No. FIFO is a cost-flow assumption and may differ from physical movement unless specific identification is used. It assigns older available costs to expense before newer cost layers. Chapter 07 · Inventory and Cost of Sales
Can one loan be current and non-current?
Yes. The next principal instalment can be current while later maturities remain non-current. Build the split from the repayment schedule and keep accrued interest separate from principal. Chapter 08 · Current Liabilities and Long-Term Assets
Why is a share issue not revenue?
A share issue obtains financing from owners rather than earning resources through operations. It increases cash and contributed capital but leaves revenue and current-period profit unchanged. Chapter 09 · Equity Financing and Dividends
Why is depreciation added back?
Depreciation reduced accrual profit without using current cash, so the indirect reconciliation adds it back. The original equipment purchase remains an investing cash flow in its purchase period. Chapter 10 · Statement of Cash Flows
Why are average balances often used?
Average balances align a period flow such as revenue or profit with the resources available across that period. An ending balance alone may be distorted by a late purchase, sale or repayment. Chapter 11 · Financial Statement Analysis
Study strategy

How to study for the exam

Follow the course sequence and keep one error ledger. For every missed question, record whether the failure came from recognition, account classification, debit-credit direction, timing, formula selection, arithmetic, statement placement or interpretation. Rework the item with new numbers, then revisit it after a delay. In the final fortnight, mix topics so the chapter name no longer supplies the method.

Time one set as multiple-choice classification and another as short problems requiring full reconciliations. Build the permitted sheet from recurring failure points rather than from the chapters you already find comfortable.
