What MKF5926 covers

The guide establishes integration and touchpoint leadership, separates brand and relationship knowledge, builds an outside-in plan, and closes with consumer learning and positioning.

Product performance, service, employees, partners and peer conversation can confirm or contradict paid activity. An accountable IMC process starts with a business and customer problem, specifies a response pathway, assigns cross-functional ownership and evaluates whether the combined contact system changed the intended outcome.

Message integration aligns verbal and visual expression so contacts are recognisable and mutually reinforcing. Strategic integration goes further by aligning audience priorities, value proposition, channel roles, service design and organisational action.

A campaign can be beautifully consistent yet strategically fragmented, while different executions can express one strategy when each adapts to its context and contributes a distinct response. People form brand meaning through search, advertising, reviews, purchase, use, service, billing, employees and conversation. Some contacts are planned and controlled, others influenced or merely observed.

A touchpoint audit maps the journey, audience state, expectation, message or experience, owner and handoff. Its purpose is not to draw a beautiful path but to find contradictions, unnecessary effort and missing proof. Conflicting messages and duplicated activity may be symptoms of competing objectives, siloed budgets, unclear decision rights, incompatible metrics or absent customer evidence.

Treating the problem as a creative inconsistency can leave the cause intact. Leadership diagnosis asks which functions benefit from fragmentation, where information stops, who can arbitrate trade-offs and how accountability will follow the whole response rather than one channel.

Brand identity describes what the organisation seeks to express; brand image describes the associations audiences hold; brand equity concerns the value associated with awareness, meanings, perceived quality, loyalty and response. Integration needs all three. Identity guides coherent action, image evidence reveals reception and equity shows whether the relationship changes behaviour or economics.

Internal intention cannot stand in for external research. Transactional knowledge records what was bought, when, where and at what value. Relational knowledge concerns history, trust, preference, service interaction, reciprocity and future expectations. Both can inform IMC, but neither gives unrestricted access to a person's motives.

The planner should state how data were obtained, what inference is justified and whether personalisation offers real value rather than surveillance or pressure. Zero-based communication planning does not assume last year's media, agencies or budget shares should continue.

It starts outside-in with the current audience, market, brand and decision problem, defines the response required and evaluates possible contact roles afresh. Historical evidence remains useful, but incumbency is not a reason. The method reveals activities sustained by habit and opens resources for more relevant solutions.

Situation analysis gathers evidence about customers, category, competitors, channels, brand, organisation and environment. Its value lies in prioritisation and linkage to the communication problem, not document length. Each fact should explain a material opportunity, constraint or uncertainty and point toward a decision.

Background information that cannot change audience, objective, proposition, contact or evaluation should be shortened or removed. A source encodes a proposition through signs, a medium carries it within a context and an audience interprets it using prior knowledge, motivation and culture. Noise includes clutter, technical failure, mistrust and competing associations.

Response may be private or delayed, while available feedback represents only part of reception. The model helps planners locate where the intended pathway can fail and which evidence can diagnose it. Elaboration describes the extent of issue-relevant thinking devoted to a message. Motivation, opportunity and ability shape whether people scrutinise arguments or rely more on accessible cues.

The routes are not fixed personality types and both can produce response. The planner should improve relevance and processing conditions where possible, use credible cues responsibly and avoid assuming that attention or liking guarantees durable attitude change. Communication models often connect awareness, knowledge, liking, preference, intention and action, but consumers need not move in one fixed order.

Trial can precede attitude, feeling can open attention and routine behaviour can be reinforced afterward. Select a pathway that fits involvement, experience and category conditions, then define measures at the transitions most important to the objective.

Classical conditioning links stimuli so that one comes to evoke a response associated with another; operant conditioning changes behaviour through consequences such as reinforcement or punishment. Marketing activity can involve both, but they should not be conflated. Pairing a brand with music is different from rewarding repeat purchase, and observed repetition alone does not reveal which learning process produced it.

Consumer decision processes can include need recognition, information search, evaluation, purchase, use and post-purchase response. The sequence varies with involvement, habit and context, and people can loop or skip stages. IMC should identify the current barrier and support the next useful decision while recognising that delivery and use become communication evidence after purchase.

Segmentation identifies meaningful groups, while targeting chooses where to concentrate resources. The decision tests whether a segment can be identified, understood and reached; whether response differs; whether value and growth are attractive; and whether the organisation can credibly serve it. Ethical implications and competitive intensity belong inside the choice.

A detailed persona cannot compensate for weak access or strategic fit. Positioning defines how an offering should be understood relative to alternatives for a priority audience. A useful statement identifies the target, frame of reference, distinctive benefit and reasons to believe. It also implies a trade-off.

Claiming every valued attribute produces generic praise and gives the organisation no basis for aligned product, experience and communication choices.

Repair a disconnected touchpoint plan

Q [4 marks]. Paid media promises instant help while the service queue takes two days. Build a four-part correction. The mark allocation used here was authored for this study guide and is not an official university marking scheme.
  • 1Map the promise and the service encounter as parts of one communication system.
  • 1Identify the capability or ownership gap creating contradiction.
  • 1Revise the promise, process or sequencing and explain the trade-off.
  • 1Measure expectation, service performance and subsequent consumer response.
The plan stops treating paid copy as the whole campaign. It brings the service process into IMC governance and either changes delivery or narrows the promise before further exposure.
Sia tip — Audit unplanned contacts before adding planned ones.

FAQ

MKF5926 FAQ

What makes IMC accountable?

It links communication activity to a defined audience response and business problem, assigns ownership and evaluates the proposed pathway rather than reporting channel output alone. Accountability also requires cross-functional ownership and evidence that the combined contacts changed the intended response.

Are all customer touchpoints planned?

No. Product use, service, employees, partners and peer conversation can communicate without appearing in the media plan. The audit must include them. The audit must test whether personalisation creates mutual value and respects expectation, permission and sensitivity.

What is zero-based communication planning?

It rebuilds each decision from current audience and market evidence instead of assuming last year's activities deserve continuation. Each inherited activity has to defeat a feasible current alternative on audience role, mechanism and cost.

How does elaboration change a message?

When motivation, opportunity and ability are high, argument quality can receive deeper scrutiny; when they are low, simpler cues and access matter more, though effects remain contextual. Argument depth, cue choice and media opportunity should be adapted without assuming one universal route.

Does the unit have a final examination?

The current assessment evidence lists coursework components totalling 100% and no final examination. Check Moodle for current report and exercise instructions. Use the current Moodle report pages for dates and grouping because the handbook supplies only the official structure.

Which source controls current task details?

The handbook controls official components and weights; current Moodle controls operational names, dates, grouping and submission requirements. This keeps the assessment mapping current without inventing a separate test or unpublished condition.

What makes a positioning statement strategically useful?

It names the priority audience, frame of reference, distinctive benefit and reasons to believe, while making a trade-off visible. The statement should guide product, service and communication decisions rather than promise every valued attribute.

Study strategy

How to prepare for the assessments

Use one organisation as a running integration case. Map paid, owned, service, product, people and peer contacts, including those the marketing team does not control. For each contact, record the audience state, message or experience, owner and next expected response. Rebuild a zero-based plan without viewing last year's channel list, then compare the two and defend every retained activity.

Practise consumer-response explanations under different motivation, opportunity and ability conditions. When studying learning, distinguish association from consequence and post-purchase reinforcement. Finish each weekly analysis with a positioning sentence that names target, frame, point of difference, support and trade-off. This routine makes the two reports cumulative without turning them into one recycled template.
