Integrated Marketing Communications and Promotion

This chapter explains the communication process (sender → encoding → message/media → decoding → receiver → feedback, with noise) and the promotion mix — advertising, PR, sales promotion, personal selling and digital/social — coordinated through Integrated Marketing Communications, using the AIDA hierarchy to plan campaigns. Promotion is a core lever in the Leadership Presentation and the group Business Report. Confirm the exact teaching week on Moodle.

Applied: an AIDA campaign plan for a new fitness app

Q [4 marks]. A start-up launches a fitness app to time-poor professionals. Design a promotion approach using AIDA and the promotion mix: name one tactic for each AIDA stage and explain the IMC principle tying them together. (4 marks.)
  • +1Attention: buy reach — short social-video and influencer content to make the target audience aware the app exists.
  • +1Interest: educate with content marketing and PR (how the app solves the time-poor problem) to build engagement beyond awareness.
  • +1Desire and Action: use a sales-promotion trial (free first month) plus testimonials to create desire, then a clear call-to-action and easy sign-up to drive the download.
  • +1IMC principle: coordinate every element — ads, PR, social, promotion — so they carry one clear, consistent message and brand voice, reinforcing rather than contradicting each other across the funnel.
Map a promotion-mix tactic to each AIDA stage (awareness via social/influencers, interest via content/PR, desire via trial/testimonials, action via a clear CTA), then state the IMC principle: one consistent message across all channels. Markers reward matching tactics to the right funnel stage and explaining the integration.
Sia tip — AIDA is a funnel — early stages build awareness/interest (broad reach), later stages drive desire/action (conversion). Don't put a “buy now” CTA where you should be building awareness. Ask Sia to check each tactic sits at the right AIDA stage and that your message is consistent (IMC).
Glossary

Key terms

Communication process
Sender → encoding → message/media → decoding → receiver → response → feedback, with noise interfering at any point.
Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC)
Coordinating all promotional elements and brand contacts to deliver a clear, consistent, compelling message.
Promotion mix
The blend of advertising, public relations, sales promotion, personal selling and direct/digital & social media used to communicate value.
AIDA
A hierarchy-of-effects model of how communication works: Attention → Interest → Desire → Action.
Reach vs frequency
Reach is the share of the target exposed at least once; frequency is how often — a media trade-off within a fixed budget.
Push vs pull strategy
Push promotes through channel members to stock/sell the product; pull builds end-consumer demand that pulls the product through the channel.
FAQ

Integrated Marketing Communications and Promotion FAQ

What does “integrated” mean in IMC?

It means every point of contact — advertising, PR, social, sales promotion, packaging, the website — tells the same clear, consistent story with one brand voice. Integration prevents mixed messages that confuse customers and waste budget; the coordination is the marketing skill, not any single ad.

How is AIDA used to plan a campaign?

AIDA maps the customer's journey from Attention to Interest to Desire to Action, so you match communication tactics to each stage: broad-reach media to create attention and interest, then conversion-focused tactics (offers, clear calls-to-action) to build desire and prompt action. It stops you spending conversion effort where you still need awareness.

Where does promotion appear in the assessment?

Communication and promotion recommendations feature in the Leadership Presentation and the group Business Report, and the weekly podcasts on these topics feed the PodQuiz. You are rewarded for a coordinated (IMC) plan matched to funnel stages, not a single tactic.

Can Sia help me with the communication process and AIDA in MARK2012?

Yes, as a study aid. Sia can explain the communication process and AIDA step by step, walk through a worked application to a real brand, and check whether your reasoning uses the framework correctly for your reflection, presentation or report. It teaches the method and checks your thinking; it does not complete graded assessment for you, and the UNSW academic-integrity policy applies — confirm assessment rules on Moodle.

Study strategy

Assessment move

Learn the communication process (with noise and feedback) and the promotion-mix elements, then practise building an AIDA plan for a brand — one tactic per stage — and stating the IMC principle that ties them together. Keep the promotion podcasts' notes for the PodQuiz. The exact teaching week is best-confirmed on Moodle. Reference any campaign facts you cite (Harvard).
