Quick Answer

What are significant figures?

Significant figures (sig figs) are the digits in a number that carry meaningful information about precision. Rules: all non-zero digits are significant; zeros between non-zero digits are significant; leading zeros are not significant; trailing zeros after a decimal point are significant; trailing zeros in a whole number (without a decimal) are ambiguous. For addition/subtraction, the result keeps the smallest number of decimal places. For multiplication/division, the result keeps the smallest number of significant figures.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Why are sig figs important?
Significant figures express the precision of a measurement: a length of 2.50 meters indicates higher precision than 2.5 meters. When you do calculations with measurements, the result cannot be more precise than the least precise input. Sig figs are a way to track this propagation of uncertainty without doing full error analysis. In science labs and homework, using the right sig figs is expected.
Are leading zeros significant?
No. Leading zeros (zeros before the first non-zero digit) are not significant. They just indicate the position of the decimal point. For example, 0.00450 has three significant figures: 4, 5, and the trailing 0 after the decimal. The leading zeros (0.00) do not count. This is why scientific notation is so useful: it makes sig fig counting unambiguous.
What about trailing zeros in whole numbers?
Trailing zeros in a whole number (without a decimal point) are ambiguous. The number 1500 could have 2, 3, or 4 sig figs. Convention varies: some treat them as significant (4 sig figs); some treat them as not significant (2 sig figs). To remove ambiguity, write in scientific notation: 1.5 times 10 to the 3 has 2 sig figs; 1.500 times 10 to the 3 has 4.
How do I round to a specific number of sig figs?
Identify the digit at the desired sig fig position. Look at the next digit: if 5 or greater, round up; if less than 5, round down. The 'half-to-even' or 'banker's rounding' rule resolves ties (5 with no following digits): round to the nearest even digit. For most homework, standard 'round half up' is acceptable. AskSia uses the convention specified or, by default, standard rounding.
How accurate is AskSia?
AskSia hits 98% accuracy on standard high school and college coursework, measurably higher than ChatGPT, Photomath, and Symbolab on the same problem sets. Accuracy comes from subject-specialized models, a symbolic verification pass that catches arithmetic errors, and a self-check step that re-derives the answer before showing it to you.
Can I get practice problems and flashcards?
Yes. After any solve, ask Sia to generate similar practice problems at SAT, ACT, AP, IB, or college difficulty, or build a flashcard set on the underlying concept in one tap. Useful for exam prep and spaced repetition before a quiz, midterm, or final.
How much does AskSia cost?
AskSia has a free plan that includes daily solves across all subjects. AskSia Pro and Super include unlimited solves, advanced subjects, the full AI tutor companion, exports, and priority response speed. See pricing for details.
