Quick Answer

What is linear interpolation?

Linear interpolation estimates an unknown value between two known data points by treating the relationship as a straight line. Given two points, the interpolated y value at a target x equals the first y plus the slope of the line between the two points times the horizontal distance from the first x. This is the equation of the line connecting the two points, evaluated at the target x. The formula extrapolates as well, but extrapolation is less reliable since you are outside the data range.

Why AskSia Solver

Why students use AskSia for Linear Interpolation.

Every step transparent, every answer self-checked.

Standard formula.

AskSia applies y equals y1 plus (y2 minus y1) times (x minus x1) over (x2 minus x1).

Direct

Interpolation vs extrapolation.

Inside or outside the data range, AskSia notes which mode applies.

Modal

Verification with endpoints.

AskSia confirms the formula returns y1 at x equals x1 and y2 at x equals x2.

Self-check

Slope and intercept.

On request, AskSia computes the line's slope and intercept.

Concept

Photo, paste, or type.

Snap handwritten or printed problems with your phone, paste from any online homework portal, or type with full LaTeX support.

Multi-modal input

Verified by AskSia.

Every answer gets a self-check pass. Sia catches sign errors and algebra mistakes before you submit your homework.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

When is linear interpolation accurate?
When the underlying relationship between x and y is approximately linear over the range you are interpolating in. For smooth, slowly-changing functions, linear interpolation works well over short intervals. For oscillating or sharply-curving functions, linear interpolation can be misleading. AskSia warns when interpolating over a wide range where curvature may matter.
What is the difference between interpolation and extrapolation?
Interpolation estimates a value inside the data range (between two known points), while extrapolation estimates a value outside the data range. The same linear formula applies to both, but extrapolation is much riskier because you are assuming the linear trend continues outside the observed range.
Can I interpolate multiple times in a sequence?
Yes. Pairwise linear interpolation between consecutive data points gives a piecewise linear approximation to the entire dataset. AskSia handles sequences of data points if you provide them, returning a piecewise linear function or interpolated values at multiple target x values.
What about non-linear interpolation?
Polynomial interpolation fits a polynomial through several points; spline interpolation fits piecewise cubics with smoothness at joins. AskSia offers non-linear interpolation options when you provide more than two points or specify a method like Lagrange, Newton's divided differences, or cubic spline.
How accurate is AskSia?
AskSia is engineered for accuracy on standard high school and college coursework. Accuracy comes from subject-specialized models, a symbolic verification pass that catches arithmetic errors, and a self-check step that re-derives the answer before showing it to you.
Can I get practice problems and flashcards?
Yes. After any solve, ask Sia to generate similar practice problems at SAT, ACT, AP, IB, or college difficulty, or build a flashcard set on the underlying concept in one tap. Useful for exam prep and spaced repetition before a quiz, midterm, or final.
How much does AskSia cost?
AskSia has a free plan that includes daily solves across all subjects. AskSia Pro and Super include unlimited solves, advanced subjects, the full AI tutor companion, exports, and priority response speed. See pricing for details.
