Are 3x and 3xy like terms?
No. Like terms must have identical variable structures, including all variables and their exponents. 3x has only x; 3xy has both x and y. They differ in their variables and so are not like terms. Other examples of unlike terms: 2x and 2y (different variables); 4x squared and 4x (different exponents); 5ab and 5a squared b (different exponents).
How do I combine like terms with negatives?
Add the coefficients with their signs. For example, 5x minus 3x equals (5 minus 3) times x equals 2x. With negatives: minus 2x plus 7x equals (minus 2 plus 7) times x equals 5x. AskSia treats subtraction as adding a negative and combines coefficients algebraically. If the resulting coefficient is zero, the term disappears from the expression.
Does the order of factors matter for like-term identification?
No. In multiplication, commutativity makes order irrelevant: xy is the same as yx, abc is the same as bca, and so on.
