Quick Answer

What is a multi-step equation?

A multi-step equation requires more than one operation to isolate the variable. Typical operations: distribute multiplication over parentheses; combine like terms on each side; move variables to one side and constants to the other using inverse operations; divide or multiply by the variable's coefficient to isolate it. The standard order: simplify each side first (distribute, combine like terms), then move terms across the equals sign, finally isolate. AskSia applies each step explicitly with the operation labeled.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

What is the order for solving multi-step equations?
First, simplify each side: distribute over parentheses; combine like terms within each side. Second, move variable terms to one side and constant terms to the other side using inverse operations across the equals sign (whatever you do to one side, do to the other). Third, isolate the variable by dividing or multiplying by its coefficient. Finally, verify by substituting back.
Why distribute before combining?
Because terms inside parentheses might combine with terms outside after distribution. For example, in 2 times (x plus 3) plus 5x, distributing gives 2x plus 6 plus 5x, which then combines to 7x plus 6. If you tried to combine before distributing, the 2 times (x plus 3) is a single term that does not combine with 5x. Distribution exposes the like terms that can combine.
What if the variable appears in a fraction?
If the variable is in a numerator, treat the fraction as a coefficient times the variable. If the variable is in a denominator, multiply both sides by that denominator first to clear the fraction (and check for extraneous roots since you multiplied by an expression containing the variable). After clearing fractions, the equation is multi-step in the usual sense.
How do I check the solution?
Substitute the solution back into the original equation (before any simplification you did). Compute each side independently. If both sides equal, the solution is verified. If they differ, there was an error in the solving steps; trace back to find it. AskSia performs this check on every solution automatically.
How accurate is AskSia?
AskSia is engineered for accuracy on standard high school and college coursework. Accuracy comes from subject-specialized models, a symbolic verification pass that catches arithmetic errors, and a self-check step that re-derives the answer before showing it to you.
Can I get practice problems and flashcards?
Yes. After any solve, ask Sia to generate similar practice problems at SAT, ACT, AP, IB, or college difficulty, or build a flashcard set on the underlying concept in one tap. Useful for exam prep and spaced repetition before a quiz, midterm, or final.
How much does AskSia cost?
AskSia has a free plan that includes daily solves across all subjects. AskSia Pro and Super include unlimited solves, advanced subjects, the full AI tutor companion, exports, and priority response speed. See pricing for details.
