How does A* search work?
A* maintains a priority queue of nodes to expand, sorted by f equals g plus h, where g is the cost from start and h is the heuristic estimate to goal. At each step, expand the lowest-f node, generate its successors, update their f values if a better path is found, and continue until reaching the goal. A* is optimal if h is admissible (never overestimates the true cost to goal).
What is an admissible heuristic?
A heuristic h(n) is admissible if h(n) is less than or equal to the true cost from node n to the goal, for all n. Admissible heuristics never overestimate. A* with an admissible heuristic is guaranteed to find the optimal solution. Common admissible heuristics: straight-line distance for path planning; sum of misplaced tiles for the 8-puzzle.
How is a Bayesian network used for inference?
A Bayesian network represents joint probability distributions compactly using conditional dependencies. To compute the probability of one variable given evidence on others, use variable elimination: sum out non-query, non-evidence variables one at a time, factoring out terms not involving the eliminated variable. How does Q-learning update Q-values?
After taking action a in state s and receiving reward r, observing next state s_prime, Q-learning updates: Q(s, a) becomes Q(s, a) plus alpha times (r plus gamma times max over a_prime of Q(s_prime, a_prime) minus Q(s, a)). Here alpha is the learning rate and gamma is the discount factor. The update moves Q(s, a) toward the observed return plus the discounted maximum future value.
