Quick Answer

What are simultaneous equations?

Simultaneous equations are systems of two or more equations that must be satisfied at the same time by the same values of the variables. For two equations in two unknowns, three methods work: substitution (isolate a variable in one equation, substitute into the other), elimination (add or subtract multiples of the equations to cancel a variable), and matrix methods (Cramer's rule or Gaussian elimination on the augmented matrix). The solution is the values that satisfy all equations simultaneously.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

What is the difference between substitution and elimination?
Substitution isolates one variable from one equation and substitutes the expression into the other equations, reducing the system by one variable each time. Elimination adds or subtracts multiples of equations to cancel one variable across two equations, also reducing the system. Both are valid; the choice depends on which is algebraically cleaner for the given coefficients.
When should I use matrix methods?
For 3x3 or larger systems, matrix methods (Gaussian elimination, Cramer's rule, matrix inversion) are usually more systematic than substitution or elimination on the equations directly. For 2x2 systems, all three methods are about equally efficient. For very large systems, numerical matrix methods are essential. AskSia picks based on system size and the request.
What does Cramer's rule do?
Cramer's rule solves a system of n linear equations in n unknowns using determinants. Each variable equals a ratio of two determinants: the determinant of the coefficient matrix with that variable's column replaced by the constants, divided by the determinant of the coefficient matrix. Cramer's rule works when the coefficient determinant is nonzero; otherwise, the system is either inconsistent or has infinitely many solutions.
Can simultaneous equations be inconsistent?
Yes. An inconsistent system has no solution because the equations are mutually contradictory. Geometrically, two lines that never meet (parallel) or two planes that do not share a common intersection give inconsistent systems. AskSia detects inconsistency from a contradiction (like 0 equals 1) during the solving process and reports no solution.
How accurate is AskSia?
AskSia is engineered for accuracy on standard high school and college coursework. Accuracy comes from subject-specialized models, a symbolic verification pass that catches arithmetic errors, and a self-check step that re-derives the answer before showing it to you.
Can I get practice problems and flashcards?
Yes. After any solve, ask Sia to generate similar practice problems at SAT, ACT, AP, IB, or college difficulty, or build a flashcard set on the underlying concept in one tap. Useful for exam prep and spaced repetition before a quiz, midterm, or final.
How much does AskSia cost?
AskSia has a free plan that includes daily solves across all subjects. AskSia Pro and Super include unlimited solves, advanced subjects, the full AI tutor companion, exports, and priority response speed. See pricing for details.
