Why is the formula half the sum of the bases times the height?
Because the average of the two bases gives a 'representative width,' and multiplying by the height gives the area. You can see this by splitting the trapezoid along a diagonal into two triangles: each has area (1/2)*base*height, and adding gives (1/2)*(b1*h + b2*h) = (1/2)*(b1+b2)*h.
What if the height is not given directly?
