Quick Answer

How does linear regression work?

Linear regression finds the line y equals a plus b times x that best fits a set of data points by minimizing the sum of squared residuals (vertical distances from points to the line). The slope is computed from sums of products and squares of the data; the intercept follows from the slope and the means. The correlation coefficient r measures linear association (between negative 1 and 1), and r squared is the proportion of variance in y explained by x.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

What is the difference between correlation and regression?
Correlation measures the strength and direction of a linear relationship between two variables; it is symmetric. Regression finds the equation of a best-fit line predicting y from x; it is directional. R squared in regression equals the square of the correlation coefficient in simple linear regression with one predictor.
How is the slope computed?
By the least-squares formula using sums of x, y, x times y, and x squared. This minimizes the sum of squared vertical distances from data points to the regression line. Equivalently, the slope equals the covariance of x and y divided by the variance of x. AskSia computes this step by step, showing the sums.
What does r squared of 0.8 mean?
It means that 80 percent of the variation in y is explained by the linear relationship with x. The remaining 20 percent of variation in y is unexplained by x. R squared ranges from 0 (no linear relationship) to 1 (perfect linear fit). A higher r squared means a stronger linear fit, but r squared alone does not tell you whether the linear model is appropriate.
Can regression handle non-linear relationships?
Linear regression assumes a linear relationship, so it does not fit non-linear curves directly. However, you can apply linear regression to transformed variables (logarithms, squares, etc.) to fit non-linear relationships indirectly. For genuinely non-linear models, use polynomial regression or non-linear regression.
How accurate is AskSia?
AskSia is engineered for accuracy on standard high school and college coursework. Accuracy comes from subject-specialized models, a symbolic verification pass that catches arithmetic errors, and a self-check step that re-derives the answer before showing it to you.
Can I get practice problems and flashcards?
Yes. After any solve, ask Sia to generate similar practice problems at SAT, ACT, AP, IB, or college difficulty, or build a flashcard set on the underlying concept in one tap. Useful for exam prep and spaced repetition before a quiz, midterm, or final.
How much does AskSia cost?
AskSia has a free plan that includes daily solves across all subjects. AskSia Pro and Super include unlimited solves, advanced subjects, the full AI tutor companion, exports, and priority response speed. See pricing for details.
